Heartfelt condolences to all Mary’s family on the sad passing of the one and only Mama Downes. Like so many others, I too had the benefit of her guidance and kindness and humour, while working in the Haven in the 80’s (alongside Kathleen and Brian, also gone but not forgotten…). I can still picture Mama in the kitchen, running the show, always watching out, she had everyone’s back. Rest in peace, Mama, you’ve earned it.

I’ve known you for as long as I’ve been friends with Mary. You and Joseph, always made me so welcome in your home. I spent more time at your house than my own at times!
I later worked with you at The Haven, my first summer job and you taught me so much.
