The death has occurred of

Michael Francis McGreevy

Hazlet, NJ and formerly of Ardlavagh, Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon

Michael Francis McGreevy, 94 of Hazlet, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2024, at home. He was born in Ardlavagh, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Roscommon, Ireland, on December 11, 1929. Michael is predeceased by his father Michael Francis McGreevy, his mother Margaret Jane (nee Hanly) McGreevy, and his son Capt. Michael Francis McGreevy III, US Marine Corp., as well as his dear sisters Maureen and Cait and loving brothers Brendan, Joseph and Sean.

He is survived by his beloved wife Maureen (nee Mary Cully) McGreevy; his sister Margaret and Denis Mahon of Dublin, Ireland; his loving children John and his wife Alissa of Moorestown, Joseph of Middletown, Maureen of Hazlet, Christopher of Matawan, Margaret Anne Birdsall and her husband David of Naples, Florida; dear grandchildren Kaitlyn, Sean, Casey, Clare, Michael, Julia, Brendan, Jack and Ava; cherished great-grandchildren Frank, Eddie, Liam and John.

Michael went to Technical School in Carrick-On-Shannon, County Roscommon, Ireland, always remembering his teacher, Mr. Sean King, who told them, “Listen up boys, this is your bread and butter.” He worked a short time in London, before heading to NYC, where he received his GED in 1956, and was a member of the New York District Council of Carpenters Local Union 608.

In 1957, he met his future wife, Maureen Cully, on the boat going back to Ireland to help his brother Brendan on a new building contract. After a few dances around the country, they met again in NYC and married on May 9, 1959. They drove to the West Coast and back in 1960, and in 1965 moved back Ireland to raise their growing family. He built a home for his family in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, Ireland, in 1969, then the family returned to the US, where for 50 years they lived in Hazlet, NJ. They were blessed with welcoming families and friends on both sides of the Atlantic.

Michael was very happy to have his home in Ireland, always remembering Stephen Finn of Stephen Finn Contractors and every tradesman by name that ever helped him along the way, including Paddy McGrath next door. He enjoyed visiting the buildings that he and his brother Brendan built in Co. Roscommon; but working for the Union too in NYC, he would regale us with stories, jokes and always the names of the men he worked with. As a Master Carpenter, he made many improvements to his home and, in retirement, he made a beautiful dining room set for his wife, with help from his friend John Keane, who assisted him with the finishing work. His home and family hosted many festive occasions over the years. Words can’t describe how much he will be missed.

Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation for Michael on Friday, May 3, 2024, from 5-9 PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ 07735. Funeral mass will be on Saturday, May 4, 2024, 10 AM, at Saint Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, NJ 07733. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery of Middletown, NJ.
