Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find information about using RIP.ie

Death Notices

To publish a death notice on RIP.ie, simply ask your funeral director to do so.  This is a free service to bereaved families and all funeral directors in Ireland have secure access to the site for the purpose of publishing death notices for funerals which they are undertaking.

In cases where, for example, a funeral is taking place abroad, the family can contact RIP.ie directly and we will liaise with the funeral director who is handling the arrangements.

Given the sensitive nature of the information on RIP.ie, we cannot accept notices directly from the public. Similarly, we cannot make changes to a notice published on the site by a funeral director, such changes can only be made by the funeral director.

The only way to guarantee that a notice appears on RIP.ie is if the funeral director publishes the notice on the site.

All notices placed on RIP.ie are archived on the site and can be found by searching: surname, county, town or date range. The only information we have available is that which is given on the site and our records go back to July 2006.

Where the death of a loved one occurs abroad and no Irish-based funeral director is involved in the arrangements, we at RIP.ie can publish the notice for you on RIP.ie.

For this, we must receive proof that the death has occurred, before the death notice may be published. Proof can be any one of the following:

  • a copy of the death certificate
  • a copy of the cremation certificate
  • a link to the notice on the funeral director’s website
  • an email from funeral director abroad confirming that they are looking after the arrangements.

There is an admin. fee of €35 (incl. VAT) for death notices for funerals which are not being undertaken by funeral directors based in Ireland.

To go ahead with the publication of the death notice on RIP.ie:

  1. Send proof, with the wording for the notice & photo, to info@rip.ie
  2. Once verified by us, we’ll send you an invoice which can be paid online
  3. On receipt of payment, the notice is published & a link to it sent to you.

Important: All notices on RIP.ie must be associated with a county in Ireland.

On the   home page   you have a few options to help you find the notice you are looking for:

If   you   only  know  the  surname   of the deceased, enter that into the "surname" field and click "search".  This returns all notices matching that surname published in the last 7 days.  Change the "from" and "to" dates, as necessary.

If  you  know  the  surname  and  county  of  the  deceased,   enter both and click "search"  This returns all notices matching that surname,  for  that  county,   published in the last 7 days.  Change the "from" and "to" dates, as necessary.

If  you  are   looking  for  a  specific  notice,  published  during  a  specific  date  range  enter the information you know into the search boxes, e.g. surname, county, then select the date range using the "from" and "to" calendars. In the example below, I want to see all notices published for the period Jan  1st  2013  to Sept.  12th  2013  matching the surname "Jones" from County "Dublin":

You can bookmark the page(s) that you visit most regularly, such as deaths in your county, so that the next time you visit RIP.ie, you will be taken straight to that page. For example, if you are interested only in  death  notices  from  Co.  Kildare, then select that county from the County dropdown menu and click search (see below). Then bookmark this page in the usual way.

Clicking the "Death Notices" tab on the  home page, gives a all list of  Recently Published Notices on RIP.ie,  that is, notices published today and yesterday, as well as some notices for funerals that are still ongoing and notices where the arrangements have yet to be confirmed.

On this page you also have the same search options as on the Home Page as well as the option to "sort" according to any of the column heading - simply by clicking on the heading you wish to sort by, such as "name", "town", "county" or "date published".

Condolences

Condolence messages are reviewed before they are published to prevent inappropriate comments from appearing on the site. Given the volume of condolences, this can take a few hours.

To ensure your message is published, please note there is a Character limit of 60 characters in the name field and 1500 in the message field. If this is exceeded your message will not submit. Character limit include spaces, commas, full stops etc.

You need to click Preview Your Condolence (which shows you your message in case you need to make an edit) and then you will see the Publish Condolence button .

Death notices are not removed from RIP.ie, they are available indefinitely and may be located simply be conducting a surname search (adjusting the date range accordingly).

Where a condolence book has been opened by the funeral director, a button displays permanently at the foot of the death notice, as highlighted in the screenshot below.

We do not close condolence books, however, a funeral director may do this at the request of a family. You can check with the funeral director if there is no condolence button showing.

Two months after publication of the death notice, the condolence book becomes ‘read only’ which means that no new condolences may be added. However, the link to the condolence book will remain at the foot of the death notice and the condolence book may be viewed, saved and / or printed by you at any time, from within the condolence book, by clicking on the “Print” button on the top right of the screen, as shown in the screenshot below.

We do not print condolence books, however, for home printing of condolence books, we have covers and presentation boxes available here.

Pre-Covid 19, online condolence books were not used so much, as condolences were typically conveyed in person at the church, wake house or funeral home.

If you look at other notices published around the same time as the notice you are looking for,  you will see that the number of condolences in general is very small (if indeed there are any present at all) compared with nowadays.

A SHORT GUIDE TO FAMILY NOTICES

There are few experiences in life that touch us as profoundly as losing a loved one. It can be a time when our lives are turned upside-down and for a while we may drift along, carried by the goodness of others.

But life goes on and with help and support we move forward, always remembering. Family notices are about remembering. They offer us one way to remember our loved ones publicly and to thank those who helped us during our time of need.

You will probably be familiar with many types of family notice, from seeing them in your local newspaper. In this short guide, we have outlined the main types of family notice. Most are obvious from their title, others need a little more explanation.

Main types of family notice:

Family notices include Acknowledgements, Month’s Mind announcements, Anniversaries and Birthday memorials and at set times during the year, families also publish notices to remember their loved ones on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and at Christmas time. Each type of family notice is explained over the following pages, including examples, templates and checklists, where appropriate.

Where to publish?

There are a number of places to publish Family Notices. Where you choose to publish your notice will be influenced by a number of factors including, but not limited to, tradition (what’s usual in your area or in your family), visibility (will it be seen by the people you want to see it, including those who do not live in the local area or buy the local paper) and cost, this is an important factor for many as the cost to publish a family notice varies greatly, from tens to hundreds of euros.

Most local newspapers charge to publish a family notice and prices differ from one publication to the next, with some insertions priced per line, others per word or column, often with an extra charge for a border, picture, colour print etc. Consequently, it is important to ask how much the notice will cost and to know exactly what you are getting for your money.

RIP.ie, with over 150,000 visits every day, offers another option for publishing family notices. You pay a modest fee, templates are provided, there is no word limit, you can add up to three photos of your loved one and importantly, you can save a draft of your notice which you can then discuss with family to make sure that everyone is in agreement with the wording. The notice remains listed in the Family Notices section on RIP.ie for up to 5 weeks, easily searchable by county, name or type of notice and all family notices that you publish on RIP.ie are stored in your member’s area. In this guide we look at each type of Family Notice individually.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

What is it?

The  Acknowledgment  is the family’s thank you to all those who helped and supported them in any way, before, during and after the funeral.  Here is an example of how a family notice, in this case an Acknowledgement, looks on RIP.ie.

The Acknowledgement  receives special treatment on RIP.ie, as this is the family’s thank you to all those who helped and supported them in their time of loss. So, as well as showing in the Family Notices section for up to 5 weeks, it can also be linked permanently to the original death notice on RIP.ie, as shown below, readily available any time the death notice is viewed, giving a lasting record of events.

The Acknowledgement can be linked  permanently  to the death notice on RIP.ie and viewed by clicking the “acknowledgement” button (highlighted below).

When to publish?

  1. In many parts of Ireland, the Acknowledgement is published approx.  one month after death, to coincide with the  Month's Mind
  2. In other parts of Ireland, the Acknowledgement is published approx.  one year after death, to coincide with the  First Anniversary.

What to write?

It can be difficult to know what to write in an acknowledgement and for this reason, we provide templates for you, shown on the following pages, as well as a checklist of those you may wish to thank in your acknowledgement. You can also add photos of the deceased to make the acknowledgement all the more personal.

Acknowledgement Template

  • The  template  shown below  is  provided as a guide only
  • Remove any brackets and replace with information relevant to your own situation

For those who telephoned, travelled long distances, sent floral tributes, cards and messages of condolences, as well as those who made charitable donations, we are truly grateful.

A special word of thanks to (name those you would like to thank specifically, see checklist included with this guide).

To those who helped in any way, your contribution made our loss more bearable. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions (optional).

Optional - The Month’s Mind Mass for (name) will be held on (date & time) in (name church/venue). All Welcome.

Always remembered and sorely missed by (list family members)

No matter how life changes,
No matter what we do,
A special place within our hearts,
Is always kept for you.

As each day dawns we think of you;
As each night falls we pray for you;
And throughout our lives no matter where;
In our hearts you are always there.

Along the road of suffering,
You found a little lane;
That took you up to Heaven,
And ended all your pain.
You may be out of sight,
We may be worlds apart;
But you are always in our prayers,
And forever in our hearts.

There comes a time for all of us
when we must say goodbye,
but memories of those we love
live on and never die.

God saw the road was getting rough,
The hill was hard to climb,
He gently closed your weary eyes,
And whispered “Peace be thine”.

A page in the book of memory,
Silently turns today.
We remember you in silence,
And make no outward show.
And what it meant to lose you,
No one will ever know.

Deep are the memories,
Precious they stay;
No passing of time,
Can take them away

A little lamb too sweet and pure,
Upon the earth to roam,
An angel came so silently,
And took our dear child home.

In tears we saw you sinking,
We watched you fade away,
Our hearts were almost broken,
You fought so hard to stay,
But when we saw you sleeping,
So peacefully free from pain,
We could not wish you back,
To suffer that again.

Two tired eyes are sleeping,
Two willing hands are still.
For one who suffered far too much,
Is resting in God's will.
You never said goodbye to us,
Perhaps it’s just as well,
We never could have said goodbye,
To one we loved so well.

God called your name so softly,
That only you could hear;
And no one heard the footsteps,
Of angels drawing near.
The golden gates stood open,
God saw you needed rest;
His garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond's glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

God saw you were getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
He closed His arms around you,
And whispered "Come to Me".

In tears we watched you sinking,
We watched you fade away;
And though our hearts were breaking,
We knew you could not stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest,
It broke our hearts to see you go,
God only takes the best.

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories a lane,
I’d walk right up to Heaven
and bring you back again.

Just a prayer from the family who loved you,
Just a memory fond and true,
In our hearts you will live forever,
Because we thought the world of you.

Loving you is easy,
We do it every day,
Missing you is a heartache,
That never goes away.

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds,
Miss me but let me go.

Our hearts still ache with sadness,
and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you...
No one can ever know

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things
I cannot change,
courage to change the
things I can,
and the wisdom to
know the difference.

Those who die in grace go no further from us than God,
and God is very near.

To us you were someone special,
Someone set apart,
Your memory will live forever,
Engraved within our hearts.

Death is nothing at all – I have only slipped away
into the next room. Whatever we were to each other,
that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name,
speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes
we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me,
pray for me. Let my name be the household
word that it always was. Let it be spoken without
effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the
same as it ever was; there is absolutely
unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of
your mind because I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was
before-only better, infinitely happier and
forever-we will all be one together with Christ.

We cannot bring the old days back,
When we were all together;
The family chain is broken now
But memories last forever.

Your life was love and labour,
Your love for your family true,
You did your best for all of us
We will always remember you.

One night a man had a dream. He
dreamed he was walking along the beach
with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes
from his life. Each scene, he
noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed
before him, he looked back at the
footprints in the sand. He noticed that
many times along the path of his life there
was only one set of footprints. He also
noticed that it happened at the very
lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the
Lord about it,"Lord, you said that once I
decided to follow you, you'd walk with me
all the way. But I have noticed that during
the most troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints. I don't
understand why when I needed you most
you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My
precious, precious child, I love you and I
would never leave you. During your times
of trial and suffering, when you see only
one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

  • In many parts of Ireland, the Acknowledgement is published  approx.   one month after death, to coincide with the  Month's Mind

  • In other parts of Ireland, the Acknowledgement is published  approx.   one year after death, to coincide with the  First Anniversary.

 What to write?

It can be difficult to know what to write in an acknowledgement and for this reason, we provide templates for you, shown on the following pages, as well as a checklist of those you may wish to thank in your acknowledgement. You can also add photos of the deceased to make the acknowledgement all the more personal.

Livestream of funerals

RIP.ie provides an online platform where Irish-based funeral directors can publish death notices for funerals which they are undertaking.

Where a funeral is being livestreamed, typically this is mentioned on the actual death notice, with a link to the livestream contained on the notice.

In some cases these are also recorded and you would need to contact the funeral director looking after the arrangements to check this (their details are typically displayed beneath the notice).

Find Practical Information

Click the "Practical Information" tab on the top navigation bar, where you will find information, from reliable sources, relevant to End of Life Matters in Ireland, inluding topics such as:

- Before a Death (incl. making a will)

- After a Death (incl. registering a death and organ donation)

- Financial & Legal (incl. bereavement grants and taxes) ....and much more.

You can quickly find what you are looking for by using the seach box at the top of the page in the Practical Information Section.

Type the word or phrase you are looking and  click the "search" button (shown above).

The results page will highlight those pages in the Practical Information Section which refer to the specific word or phrase  you searched for.

The "Resources"  area, at the bottom of the  Practical Information Section,  is useful for quickly finding guides, help, lists and links. It also includes  readings, poems, quotes, music,  books  and sympathy cards, which may offer some small comfort in a time of loss.

Maps & Directions to Churches

RIP.ie has created a database of maps  for churches in Ireland.

When a funeral director is publishing  a notice on RIP.ie, they can attach a church map to that notice, so that it will display with that notice. If a map has not been attached to a notice, contact your funeral directors to add this.

Should you spot an error with any church map, please let us know asap so that this can be corrected.  Do this by calling 041 684 9801 or emailing  info@rip.ie

Charities & Voluntary Organisations in Ireland

When a death occurs, families often request that a donation be made to a charity or voluntary organisation, in lieu of flowers, and this is often  included in the death notice.

To help families know what charities and voluntary organisations exist in Ireland click  here   for a listing of  charities and voluntary organisations, actively working in  Ireland  and  abroad to improve the lives of others.

Each charity has a brief description and a live link to their website, where you can find out more about the good work they do.  If your preferred charity is not on our list, please  let us know.
