Amy and family, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your lovely mother. May she rest peacefully. Sending all my love.
— Jen Sherry, Melbourne
Hilda was the most amazing of people and teachers. In the Coláiste, she inspired me with a love of Geography which I went on to study. Every student who ever knew her had the highest of praise for her. She was eloquent, passionate, a natural communicator and mentor. Simply wonderful. My deepest sympathies to all her family and friends at this sad loss: I hope that knowing of her legacy provides some consolation.
— Aine NicCharthaigh
Sincere sympathy to you all on your sad bereavement.
Sympathy also to my neighbour John on the death of his sister.
May Hilda rest in peace

My deepest condolences to you all on the passing of Mrs Raftery.
I had the great luck to be taught by her. She was of course a gifted teacher, but more than that, she was universally well liked and highly regarded by her pupils. I never remember Mrs Raftery resorting to the use of sarcasm or cutting remarks and we responded in kind - with nothing but affection for her.
Her classes were the sweet spot in the school day. She would sweep in - cape always draped from the elbows and billowing behind her - and set forth with a great flurry of energy and enthusiasm, which of course was infectious. Mrs Raftery really was the template for what a great teacher could be. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. I measc laochra na nGael go raibh a anam dílis.
— Anne Power, Ard teist 1989

Sympathies to Mrs. Raftery's family. She was without doubt our most inspiring secondary teacher...I remember her saying , when you go on a Sunday drive never go over a bridge, without asking your parents, what river flows under this ! Her spirit lives on! R.I.P.
— Bríd Ní Chléirigh ( Class of '77)
Mo chomhbhrón ó chroí le Marinella, agus clann Hilda ar fad ar a bás le déanaí, múinteoir eiseamláireach, tiomanta, paiseanta, cliste, greannmhar agus tuisceannach. Las sí tine ionainn go léir d'fhoghlaim na Staire, bhaineas an oiread sin taitnimh as a cuid teagaisc, tuiseana agus grinn. Bean ar leith ab ea í agus beidh dea chuimhne agam go deo ar mo laethanta ar scoil toisc go raibh sé d'ádh orm a bheith ina rang Staire Ardteiste. She made History come alive for all of us and her dry sense of humour and absolute humanity was an inspiration. She is a huge loss to her family and to all of us who were lucky enough to have been in her orbit. Suaimhneas Síoraí di! Jacqueline Ní Fhearghusa

Sincere sympathies to the Raftery family on your loss. Mrs Raftery had the unenviable job of teaching me History and Geography as Gaeilge for the Inter Cert. Just listening to her in class was enough to stimulate your interest in the subject. A born teacher.

I met her a few times over the years, at reunions and other events. She had an amazing memory for faces and pupils.

My sincere condolences to the Raftery family on the heavy loss of Mrs Raftery. Mrs Raftery taught me in the 'Scoil A' at Laurel Hill in the 1980s and I remember her as an extraordinarily inspiring and kind teacher. I still remember how exciting she made the 'Flight of the Earls' on the Inter. Cert. history syllabus. I also studied Leaving Cert. history with her and it was the most exciting, fun, inspiring, and intellectually stretching experience (I since went on to an academic career, inspired by her teaching). I owe her a very great deal. Mrs Raftery was an exceptional teacher who inspired thousands of Laurel Hill students and I remember her with deep gratitude: I was very lucky to be taught be her. May she rest in peace.
