I first met Tom in May 1980, when were both young men. We lost contact for a few years - he went to the U.S. and I went to England. Nearly thirty years later we met up again and Tom was as i remembered, with just a little less hair. We didn't always agree but we never fell out. He was always honest (even when I thought he was wrong) and always conducted himself with sincerity and honesty particularly when it involved martial arts. He gave his time freely and for that alone I will continue to remember him fondly. I will miss our chats over the phone, which always went on for much longer than i had intended, and his warm and genuine welcome when we met. Thank you, Tom, for your friendship.
— Don Blaney

To Peter and the Foley family. Sincere condolences on the passing of my friend Tom.
I first met Tom when he fronted the Kilkenny Black Dragon karate club in the late 1970s. Fond memories of training in the Friary Hall and in the County hotel in portlaoise. I roomed with Tom when we organised a trip to England where we fought in an international karate tournament in Birmingham around 1979.
