Aidan Fortune

The death has occurred of

Aidan Fortune

Coolballow and formerly High Street, Wexford Town, Wexford

Beloved husband of 44 years to Margaret Fortune (née Cassidy) and son of the late William (Bill) and Margaret (Peggy) Fortune.  Dear Father of Conor, Aedín and Sinéad.  Brother of Liam and Kate.  Sadly missed by his wife, son, daughters, brother, sister, grandchildren Santiago, Nicholas and Ethan, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Aidan passed away peacefully at Knockeen Nursing Home in Barntown, Co. Wexford on the morning of August 6th following a long battle with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer.  Born in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow on July 11th, 1952, he grew up in Castlebridge and later Wexford town where he attended the 'Tech' before training as an electrician in Waterford.  While working in Drogheda, he met the love of his life, Margaret Fortune (née Cassidy).  They were married in 1978 in Cootehill, Co. Cavan and had children Conor in Cork, and Aedín and Sinéad in Blackwater, Co. Wexford.

After travelling widely internationally for his work as a turbine technician, Aidan emigrated to the United States with his family in 1991, living in Connecticut and New Jersey before retiring in Florida and Wexford.  Following his diagnosis and treatment in Florida, Aidan fulfilled his wish of returning home to Wexford in June of this year.  He celebrated his 70th birthday just weeks before his death.

Aidan was a committed family man who showed great kindness and generosity to many.  All who knew him appreciated his sharp wit and creative flair, as well as his love of fine food, music and travel.  Through amateur photography and astronomy he expressed his love of the natural world and a yearning to know more about the cosmos.  He will be sadly missed by his loving family, relatives and friends across several countries.

May He Rest in Peace
