The death has occurred of Brian Hearne
Sutton, Dublin

April 29, 1937 – May 17, 2020. Brian Hearne (83) of Sutton, Co. Dublin, passed away peacefully at the Beaumont Hospital on Sunday, 17th May 2020, of complications brought on by several years of declining health.

He will be sadly missed by his four children: Richard, Jonathan, Lisa, and Brian Jr and his six grandchildren (Christopher, Emily, Laoise, Katie, Lucey, and Rob); as well as his sister Dana and brother-in-law Enn and their children Karl, Ciara, and Rory in Canada; his younger brother Rory and sister-in-law Kate and their daughter Charlotte in Skibbereen, and cousins Paula and Michele. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine McGrath, in August 2012.

The eldest child of R.J. Hearne of Co. Clare and Dublin, and Ann Quinn of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, Brian was born and grew up in Clontarf and Sutton and spent many carefree summers in Castlecomer among his extended family.

He was educated at Belvedere College and studied at The Insurance Institute and UCD before embarking on a successful career in the insurance brokerage firm, Lewis Hearne, which he co-founded with Gerry Lewis.

Brian was an avid sportsman, a President of Suttonians Rugby Club, and a member of Sutton and Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Clubs, and also enjoyed playing golf, sailing, skiing, and swimming while vacationing at his cottage in Connemara. A talented amateur pianist and a bon vivant by nature, he liked nothing better than making music with his many friends.

After he was diagnosed with a Bipolar Disorder at 50, Brian gradually withdrew from his work. In his final years, he was a resident at The Tara Winthrop Private Clinic - a private long-term-care residence in Swords, where he was happy and was considered "a bit of a character and a nice man, who was close to our hearts." The family wishes to thank the staff at the residence and at Beaumont Hospital for the excellent care they provided to Brian.

May he rest in peace

A private funeral will take place for immediate family. Those who would have liked to attend the funeral, but due to current restrictions cannot do so, please feel free to leave a message in the Condolence Book at the bottom of this page or send on condolences by traditional manner.
