Sincere condolences to Mona, Sean and Joe, and to all of the family. Al was a gentleman, in every sense of the word. I remember the times when Al helped with the transport of the Rathnew Scout Group, and when we went for the weekend or summer camps. There was not an abundance of 'lifts' back then but Al would always be there with his yellow Opel Kadett, to help with getting us to/from the venues. Over the Sally Gap, and as Al would say "this car could drive itself up here", as Al, Sean and the Opel so often travelled that route on the way to his beloved Mondello Park. My son and I had a great chat with Al, and he was telling us about the roar, noise and excitement the day that one of Eddie Jordan's F1s raced round the Mondello track. Al had a great passion for motor racing and sport in general The light of Heaven to him, may he rest in peace.
— Tommy Kearney

Just heard this sad news.Condolences to Joe,Sean,Mona and the extended Caffrey family.Great memories of the work that Al put into the soccer club in the early days. No task was too much for him ,marking the pitch ,putting up and down nets ,selling tickets ,to helping to pick and manage team. The work he did in the Horse Park even went as far as fencing to make sure the cattle didnt go out on main road. Every year when the season ended he would take down the goalposts and paint and get ready for the next one. The Horse Park was his pride and joy. When we joined the AUL league as Al worked in Dublin we depended on him to help find the pitches in places like Tallagh(before M50),Greenhills Road ,Nutgrove etc.Al was always a great man if anyone needed a lift to work or to college as well.Al continued to work with the soccer club down through the years up until recently.During the off season he would take himself off to Mondello Park to help out at the motor racing .He was also a great supporter of Shamrock Rovers and attended all of their home games through the good and the bad.Rathnew has lost a great community man who would always help out at local events. Thanks for everything my good friend.RIP AL.
