Dearest Martina Derek Lauren and Sarah,

Our deepest condolences at the untimely passing of Anna. May your happy memories give you comfort in days ahead. We will be keeping you all in our thoughts at this difficult time.
Love and prayers.

There is no night without a dawning,
No winter without a spring,
And beyond death’s dark horizon,
Our hearts once more will sing.

For those who leave us for a while,
Have only gone away,
Out of a restless careworn world,
Into a brighter day.
— Carmel and Denis Mulligan

I was very shocked to hear of Anna's untimely death. I will miss seeing her smiling, animated face when we were having coffee and long chats in the Radisson. I'll miss the telephone conversations in which Anna's powerful memory, in one sentence, would take her through several long ago happenings in her life or in books she had read, that connected, somehow, with the topic we were talking about. Few people our age would regularly translate a paragraph or two of Latin from the Aeneid or Caesar's Gallic Wars for pleasure or spend a whole day reading poetry. One recent happy memory is of visiting her flat and ending up sitting at her table with a pile of poetry books, each reading out her favourite poems. Nor will there ever be another chance to talk about remembered pleasure in listening to Fleetwood Mac or Beethoven or in reading Charles Dickens or some author that had been discussed on Arena. May she rest in peace.
