Our sincere sympathy to Patricia and Kevin and all the Durnin family on the death of Brendan, may he rest in peace.
— Francie and Betty McConnon, Killanny
RIP Mr Durnin.
Mr Durnin taught French with a passion and could be a humorous entertainer in his own unique way.
I fondly recall when a small chap came into his class wearing blue shoes . "Why are you wearing blue shoes ?" the chap was asked. "Is it because you are a Smurf ? Mr Durnin continued. "No" was the response. " If you are not a Smurf kindly leave my class and return with proper school attire" There was some sort of feeble rebuttal that they were the only shoes he could get. " Out" instructed Mr Durnin while responding to the whole class with "He could only find blue shoes in the shoe shop, absolute nonsense." Class was in stitches.

Our deepest sympathy to Patricia, Kevin and extended family. We were so sorry to hear of Brendan’s untimely passing.
Brendan was a valued colleague for over thirty years in De la Salle College. A teacher of French, he was immersed in French culture and language. When Dundalk twinned with Reze in France, Brendan involved himself in the process from the beginning. A man of many gifts, he was instrumental in laying the foundation for the introduction of Art to the college curriculum.
Brendan was a man of great intellect and learning, a fount of knowledge on history and literature stretching back to classical times. His other great interest was participating in quizzes and I shared many quiz tables with him. When Brendan was participating, quizmasters knew there was no room for error.
In addition to his many gifts and talents, I will remember Brendan most of all for his decency, courtesy and kindness.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Deepest Sympathy to the entire Durnin Family on your Immense loss. Brendan, was man of great Wisdom, Integrity, Worldliness, and in whom possessed a wonderful degree of Communication skills throughout his teaching career. Respectful and Fair Brendan never judged too harshly and was richly appreciated by his fellow teachers as his Teamwork and Integration skills shone to the fore. Many conversations I had with Brendan in the Lordee Pub in Bridge St were i got a wonderful insight into the True and Compassionate man who taught Myself for many years. He was Deeply Revered by Georgina and Brendan the then proprietor's of the Lordee, and personally speaking I was very Honoured to have had those Meaningful, Responsive and Positive Conversations back in the day. To all of us students you were Mr Durnin, that strange delightful and strict French teacher. We were very saddened to hear of Brendan's death.
Brendan was a longstanding, valued DLS colleague and friend, a master of the French language, author and, in his spare time, a successful TV quiz contestant. Having shared a house with Brendan for a short while, we got to know another side of his personality, the shy, quiet, private one.
We extend our sympathy to all Brendan's family. May he rest in peace.
