Jo-Ann, Heather, Paul, Marie, Maugy, Breeda, John & Peter - my deepest condolences on the loss of Anthony.
I am so grateful for the gift to be Anthony's neighbour most of my life - firstly in Charlemont Terrace through the 60’s & 70’s & in later years in Ballintemple.
Anthony had a profound impact on everyone & was truly the very best listener I’ve ever met.
He helped our family enormously over the years & had that innate ability & willingness to translate the most complex of medical situations into words that could be readily understood.
In recent years I had the privilege to write with Anthony in a small writers group where in every sitting he would always find the perfect words of encouragement for everyone at the table.
God rest my friend & thank you for your kindness & empathy always. You leave an incredible legacy behind and you will be sorely missed.

I have fond memories of Tony teaching us the importance of being present with the families of children who were ill.
On one occasion I recall him reviewing a child with some serious issues. He began by counting the toes and reassuring the mother there were just the right amount of them. I teach his wisdom when I can.
Thanks Tony,
Fred English

Sincere sympathy to the family of Prof Ryan. He provided our premature son & daughter with outstanding care for which we will forever be grateful. We will always remember him with his pen and paper and how he sat down beside us explaining about our children’s prematurely and health using words and drawing diagrams on this piece of paper. A True Gentleman and a Scholar.
As a nurse in the post natal ward I used to be in awe at the beautiful way he spoke to parents especially when imparting bad news. He always had the piece of paper. He always began with the good stuff " lovely baby girl, great hair( laugh from parents !) perfect weight, perfectly normal head circumference". He slowly broached the bad news in asking the parents ,what they understood about the baby being admitted to the neonatal unit. He had pen in hand to draw the diagram so as they would understand. He always left the paper with the good bits written on top. He was always so admirable, beautifully humble, courteous, capable and he made everyone he encountered feel the better for having met him.
Dear God !!!! I think I have just painted a picture of the "perfect man"!
I think I am right ! I hope he smiles now.

Tony was a wonderful man, fabulous doctor, teacher and colleague and so giving of his time.He was the leading light in Ireland in neonatology for years. He was quietly spoken, calm and unassuming and yet so so knowledgeable.Tony was responsible for the rolling out of the neonatal resuscitation programme in Ireland and is responsible for the saving of so many lives not just in his native Cork but throughout the whole of Ireland and beyond. His legacy is enormous. One wonders indeed how many children and young adults Tony is responsible for saving. Its an honour to have known such an amazing man.My sincere condolences to his wife and family for their terrible loss.

I am saddened to hear of Tony’s passing. Tony’s commitment as a doctor extended far beyond his relationship with individual children and their families. His commitment to supporting the establishment of a single maternal and neonatal unit in Cork was pivotal in achieving this outcome which so greatly improved the care provided for premature babies. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Professor Ryan. He was a kind gentleman and patient tutor with one of his many legacies being to have improved the care of neonates in the back of emergency ambulances across Ireland. Ar dheis Dé do raibh a anam.
My deepest condolences to Paul, Heather, Jo-Ann and the Ryan family. I have such fond memories of Tony during my school days with Paul - such a kind, gentle man. Keeping you all in my thoughts during this sad time.
Heartfelt condolences Jo-Ann to you and all your family at this time of great loss.Tony was such a wonderful and caring human being, touching so many lives. He helped me so much in my first few weeks as SHO in Neonatology in the Erinville. His Medical knowledge was amazing and it was no surprise he became an illustrious Professor of Paediatrics. His caring nature was his greatest gift of all for which I, and so many colleagues and patients are eternally grateful. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
How blessed we were to have Tony in our world, and in our worlds.

I was very sad to hear of Prof Ryan’s death. May he rest in peace. He was a fabulous doctor and a lovely, kind human being; I am very grateful for his kindness, humour and expertise while he looked after my child some years ago.
Sincere sympathy to Paul and the extended Ryan on your sad loss.
It is distressing to hear of Tony’s untimely death. Jo-Ann and family, Helen and I send heartfelt condolences.
Tony was a unique clinician, educator, organiser and gentleman. Neonatology is a most challenging specialty not just for the responsibility of managing individuals at life’s most vulnerable time, but also for their quality of life thereafter. Thousands of former patients who are leading fulfilled lives in this country and beyond bear testimony to his skills.
Of course, vulnerability carries serious risks and the outcome is not always as wished. Parents with a child in a neonatal unit sometimes endure months of anxiety and stress and Tony’s calm professionalism shone through. Professionalism is not learnt from textbooks, but by example and this quality of his will live on. The many medical and nursing junior colleagues, who he had a hand in training, will maintain continuity of his qualities to their successors.
I learnt a lot from him and am proud to have had him as a colleague and friend.
