Its difficult to sum her up in such a small space. But I will say you would have to travel far to get a better nurse or person. Rest in peace.

My condolences to Cathy's family, colleagues, and friends. I was saddened to hear of Cathy's untimely passing. I first met Cathy 25yrs ago when i was underaking research in the area of CF. Cathy was so helpful in advising me on what areas of research really mattered in making a difference to the lives of young patients and their families. She was a straight talker, a wealth of knowledge, and most importantly cared for her patients and families with unselfish dedication and love. Thank you Cathy and rest in peace now.

I was heartbroken to learn of Cathy’s passing.

It was Cathy who was there for my parents on the day I was first diagnosed, rousing them from their fear with her characteristic pragmatism and reassuring smile.

She would go on to be a staple of my clinic visits in the first two decades of my life. She was endlessly patient and a great listener, always in my corner, and always ready to crack a joke if the situation called for it.

It was difficult to imagine clinic after she retired, just as it is difficult now to imagine a world without her in it. She was truly a formidable human being.

Neither I nor my parents will ever forget Cathy and all she did for us over the years. It was a privilege that we knew her, as I know it was for all who did.

Sending my love to her family, and to her colleagues at CUH, who carry the legacy of her life’s work. I know they will continue to make her proud.

My sincere condolences to Cathy’s family, friends and the CF team. Thank you for sharing Cathy with us.

I met Cathy when I was 8 years old. From that day on, Cathy become one of the central figures in my life. Cathy was our second Mom, someone who knew that you needed reassurance but who also knew you needed to be tough. She would come into the ward every morning at the start of her shift and every evening before she left. It was something she continued to do when I was an adult. When she had to choose between paediatrics and adults, I was so relieved she decided to ‘follow her adults’ and stick by us until her retirement.

It is hard to put into words the woman that Cathy was. But for me, as a patient, Cathy was Cathy. She was the person who was by my side through it all. She delivered all her advice in a no-nonsense manner while never dismissing how unfair things could be. Everyone in my life knew Cathy. ‘What did Cathy say?’, ‘Did you see Cathy?’ She was a powerhouse, fearless and never took no for an answer. She ensured her patients had that trait too, a stubbornness to push beyond limitations.

Cathy, you taught me how to take care of myself, and to never give up. I am here today because of you. You trained a team in the CUH that you can be proud of, who take care of us as you showed them. I will continue to try and make you proud.
Rest now and the angels in Heaven will take care of you as you have taken care of us.
I love you and miss you.xx

To Cathy’s family, her CF colleagues and all those who loved Cathy our sincere sympathy on your great loss. Cathy came into our lives in 2000 when I was overwhelmed with the diagnosis I’d be given. I can remember Cathy taking my tiny baby in her arms and calmly talking me through my many questions. She was kindness personified and she was always at the other end of the phone for my many crisis phone calls! Cathy dedicated her life to all the CF patients that passed through her hands and she was an extended part of all CF families. RIP Cathy, you deserve the best bed in Heaven with those angels guiding you home that you helped here on earth. Your name will always be connected with the wonderful advances that our CF patients have the advantage of today.

Heartbreaking condolences and deepest sympathy to my darling friend Pauline, to Noel and Mike and to all Cathy's family, great friends and her colleagues in CUH and the C.F. family. She always welcomed me into her home when I'd go down to visit and stay with Pauline. As the saying goes: "mi casa es su casa" my house is your house - and that was so very true. Everybody was welcomed into her home in Ballincollig and we all loved going down to her. The breakfast, the infamous brown bread, the glass of wine, the chats, the opinions Cathy did and had it all. She was just a super woman both in her work and home life, and will be missed more than she will ever know by everyone. Rest easy Cathy and keep you spirit near to all those mourning you. x

To the Shortt Family, the CF Team, Friends and CF Family.

Only the most special are lucky enough to meet a real live angel and we have all been blessed to do so through Cathy's life.

The mass yesterday and the condolences here tell us of a unique woman who walked amongst us. We had the privilege of her guidance, advise and fun over the years and will love her forever.

Thank you Cathy, an angel has returned to heaven no doubt to a resounding welcome from her boys and girls who went before her.

As the treatment of CF evolved she always said her wish was to have OAP's with CF (in other words, a long healthy life). Cathy's work will ensure this comes to pass.

Cathy, you were a mentor, and a teacher to me in my early days, in Galway, trying to find my way. Your support professionally as our Cf team was being formed was immeasurable. I could ring you for anything, night or day. You set me straight and I listened. Over the years you became one of my best friends, part of my little family, the late night chats with my father Christy in the sitting room, putting the world to right. Cathy, Trish & me, the three muskateers, who travelled the world together, had the best fun together and the best laughs. We,ll leave out the time we almost got arrested at the US border, we could write a book. You were fearless. I can say now, you were one of the bravest people I know. What a wonderful family you have, you were so blessed, I will miss you terribly Cathy. Lady and Sonny will be hugged to bits. Untill we meet again Cath, may god hold you in the palm of his hand.
