Terribly shocked and sad to hear of Cyril's sudden passing when I arrived in Ireland a couple of days ago. I only met Cyril 2 years ago when I first came to Doolin. Hearing him play with Blackie and Geraldine and Eoghan was totally mesmerizing, I was laughing and crying at the same time. I'v never heard anything like it in my life and the music always transports me so I feel like I'm floating over the cliffs. Every year when I come to Ireland I go to Doolin to experience this music, it will not be the same without Cyril. And he was always so friendly and took a moment to talk to me. Thank you for the music, Cyril, those evenings in Doolin were highlights in my life.

My heartfelt condolences to Cyril's family, to Blackie, Eoghan and Geraldine and all his friends in Ireland. Rest in peace Cyril.

Sending my very deepest sympathy at the loss of the gentlest of gentleman, Cyri, with the sparkling eyes and face that exuded contentment and love of family, community, music and song. My brother, Kieron Concannon, settled in Clare over 10 years ago with his darling Sue (my best friend).oh how blest am I to have met Cyril on several occasions and to watch and listen to his sublime talent as both a musician and singer. Cyril’s joie de vivre will live on forever throughout Doolan and in any venue his voice could be heard. My sympathies to Cyril’s wonderful wife and family and of course, his dear friend, Blackie.
— Yvie Topping, Jersey
My sincerest condolences to all of Cyril's family and friends. A highlight of my younger years was going to hear Cyril playing his Joe Foley bouzouki with Pat Mullins (fiddle), Pat Costello (banjo) and John Lyons (accordion) in their weekly session in Leydens Bar (now Patrick's) in Upper Market Street, Ennis back in the late 80's/early 90's. Probably the best trad music ensemble ever in Clare, they had a wonderful character and driving swing to their playing. Thanks for those very memorable sessions. God Bless and RIP Cyril.
— PMK
My condolences to Cyril's family that always filled him with pride and joy, and also to Blackie, his partner in tune for many years. My heart goes out to you all.
Still shocked and heartbroken by Cyril's passing.
I was privileged to hear Cyril sing on many occasions, to have him accompany my singing and to just have a chat or a nod of Hello from him.
Doolin nights will never be the same.
— Adva, Doolin
Sincere condolences to all who loved him. Cyril was gentle family man first. He and Blackie were also our Lennon-McCartney of trad… the impact of that voice and seemingly effortless bouzouki playing will be surpassed only by his legacy here in Doolin and far beyond. Everyone fortunate to venture into McDermott's or McGann's at the right time will never forget. What a wonderful send-off he was gifted, fitting end to a life well lived. Rest easy Cyril.
— Trish and Freddie White, Doolin.

My husband, Sam Maloney, and I first encountered Cyril and Blackie playing at McDermott’s Pub in Doolin back in October 2015. That was our first time visiting Ireland and we felt fortunate to find ourselves in Doolin among such gifted musicians.

We’ve returned to Ireland four times after that, our most recent visit being in October 2022. Again, we were lucky to catch Cyril and Blackie at McDermott’s. We’ll return again (and again) to County Clare, but it will always feel like there’s a vibrant presence missing with the loss of Cyril O’Donoghue.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Cyril’s immediate and extended family, friends, and the entire County Clare community.

I knew Cyril for the guts of 30 years and playing with him at our annual meet-up at the Bb session at Ennis Trad Fest was the highlight of my musical year. He was special as a musician but even more special as a person. His love for his family was very prominent in all of our conversations and my heart goes out to you all. You certainly did him proud as his funeral service yesterday. I will be thinking of you in these painful times.
— Síle Boylan
Sincere condolences to Cyril’s family & friends and all who knew him around the world.

Heartbreaking news. Cyril came into my life as recently as 2018 when a mutual friend and fellow musician introduced us. We recorded some songs together and played a few live shows. It felt like I had known him all my life such was his character, warm, caring, talented, genuine, funny, an honest soul, and one who’s belief in what I was doing made me feel 10 feet tall. Over the last few days I’ve listened many times to a recording of one particular show we played in Dublin. His solo rendition to a packed audience of ‘Lord Franklin’, just his voice and his Joe Foley Bouzouki, is hauntingly beautiful, at that very moment, I knew he was special.

The world for now may have lost a truly great talent with a unique voice, a musical giant no less, his music and song however, will forever remain.

Rest easy man.
— Alan Marshall

Dear Ann and Family and Blackie,
We are absolutely devastated to hear of the loss of Cyril, such a great man and musician. Myself and my children Martin and Amy have been watching Cyril and Blackie play for many, many years in Doolin. Cyril was such a gentleman so kind and always took the time to talk to us. My husband Dave and I will always be so honoured that Cyril and Blackie came to the UK to play at our wedding 3 years ago. We have wonderful photos we could share.
We are devastated at Cyril’s passing and our thoughts are with you all.

Dear Ann and family,
I am one of the many passers-by in Doolin who were in awe of Cyril's talent and his immeasurable gift of making everyone feel special. I wrote this on my social media and would like to leave it here along with my deepest condolences on the loss of Cyril.

And as the evening sun set after a beautiful day in Copenhagen, the devastating news came from Co. Clare that the incomparable Cyril O'Donoghue had passed away.
He was a masterful musician and bouzouki player and one of the finest balladeers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

We only got to know each other in the last two years when I spent a lot of time in Doolin and became a regular at the shows of the band Dubhlinn in McGann's Pub and McDermott's Pub, with Cyril, Blackie O'Connell and Eoghan Neff, an outlet that took traditional Irish music to a different, almost tribal and spiritual level.

I'm very proud that Cyril taught me one of his iconic offerings, Alistair Hulett's "My old man", a truly haunting song about a woman learning to live without the man she once loved, but who can't stay away from the drink.
When I first heard him sing this song, I didn't know what hit me, and I sat in the audience bawling my eyes out.
In all my life, I've never heard a male singer that touched me as deeply as Cyril did.
He meant what he sang with every word and it showed the kind spirit he was. We were all fortunate to have been in the presence of his magic.

My heart goes out to his family and friends and to the community of Doolin, Co. Clare, and most of all to his bandmates Eoghan and Blackie who, together with Cyril, created nights of pure bliss that restored my faith in the true meaning of music.

Grá mór and rest easy!
— Martin Praetorius

I am still heartbroken by the news of Cyril passing, and my condolences go out to his family and friends.

During his several visits to Finland, we had opportunities to play music together and share thoughts about music and life in general. Cyril was a man with a sense of humor similar to mine, and we enjoyed many laughs as the nights grew old.

He was someone I looked up to and respected, and I can only hope to carry a part of his heritage along with me. Only last week I thought about sending Cyril a message. I now regret that I didn't.
