Rip Dennis from the Sharkey family. Dennis was a lovely friendly man and a nice man
— Eileen Sharkey
Dear Denis, where do I begin. Only found out about your passing.
I’ve know you all my life and would consider you along with John Minahane and Dave Fennell my ‘uncles’. I have nothing but fond cherished memories of you though-out my life. So much time over the years me and my sister Andrea spent in 13 Waterloo Road especially when my da lived there before going to London when he split up with my ma.
So many crazy characters came to that house like Una with her mice in her pocket 😆 and old Horis Porter who we were terrified off. We thought he was Nosforto.
We loved Timmy and Maggie the cat. You would make Maggie Salut because she ‘was in the army’ 😂 you loved those cats and the other many many cats you took in and cared for with all your gentle soul.
When Tayla went to primary in St Bridgids we would pop in to see you too. You were her great uncle and she loved you and so did her partner Steven. They found you and Johns highly intellectual ramblings transfixing. We all did. We loved all your stories of childhood in Cork and of your swims in the 40 foot in just your underpants 😂
Sadly when you had to move away I only got to see you a handful of times or speak to you on the phone.
Rest in peace Denis. May you spend eternity in a cat cafe with a cuppa tae in one hand and a pipe in the other. Thank you for being such a big part of my life, forever loved and in my heart always,
Love Karen xxxx
— Karen Byrne, D.8 (Tonys daughter)
Denis has always been a great pal to my grandad. Him, Tony and John three great eccentric intellectuals, with profound and rich opinions on music, politics and ancient languages alike, who lived off the beaten track and moved to the rhythm of their own beat. Who were so influential to my life.

Denis for one, well, we shared a great love for cats. This is was before the internet. Pre cat memes when to love them was unique and created instant camaraderie. A comrade definitely Denis was. He used to meet my grandad sometimes outside my school with Una, who liked to keep mice in her pockets and Denis would give me food to give to the cats who lived on the grounds of St. Mary’s church. You can’t imagine how magical the two of them were in the eyes of a child and they’ll always be framed that way to me.

He always insisted my grandad let me go to the flat on Waterloo road if he had a new litter of kittens. There was Mags, the famous cat who saluted when Denis said “you’re in the army now Mags”.

For birthdays and such Denis would bring me little trinkets he’d thrifted, a Cupid dish, a ceramic cat box and a glass angel. I’m 32 now and they’re still displayed proudly on my shelf.

What a wonderfully rich and unique person he was with a heart of gold. Denis, you’ll never be forgotten. I’ll carry a piece of your gentle soul each time I encounter a moggy on my path!
— Tayla
I first met Denis in the summer of 1971. 5 of us rented a flat off Stephen's Green where we lived for the next 9 months. He was always an interesting man to talk to. Although I left Ireland in the mid 70s, I always looked forward to visiting him in Waterloo Road on return visits to Dublin and discovering what he was thinking about. We lost touch when he left Dublin. A wise and kind man.

Just heard that Denis died. He was my great friend from Harcourt Street in the 70s, Waterloo Road since the 80s and in recent years Roscommon. I remember him for all the fun we had over the years, his great generosity and humanity. We met the last few years in Roscommon and he always prepared an interesting itinerary for our day out. This past September when we met, he seemed like the old Denis of years past and we had great fun. Not a day passes that I don't recall some phrase that I picked up from him. Today I shed a tear and warmly remember the great Denis Hurley.
