Des was an ego-free, wise, insightful and gentle man who contributed hugely to Na Fianna in so many ways. The last time I met Des was on the bus before his recent illness and we sat and talked about his beloved Mary and he inquired about my son, Fionn. That was Des, always keeping an eye out for others.

— Dave & Carol Fenton and Family
I had the great pleasure of getting to know Des as a family friend and as a leader of our community. He gave so much of himself for the good of others, shared his values with deeds and soft words, not angry tones, and contributed with no expectation of return. More than all that, he loved Mary and his family, and through them, he celebrated his language, his sport, his community, and his country. In 2013, we walked into Croke Park together by chance, to supoort Kickhams, I said you're very good to come Des, he said ahh you'd have to support a neighbour, but I'm definitely not wearing colours!, he smiled. I was delighted to repay the favour just a few weeks ago, and we both laughed about it. I am so sad to see him gone. My thoughts are with Tiernan Fiona and Eimear. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam uasal
— Paul McAuliffe

Sincere condolences to Tiarnan, Fiona and Eimear on the very sad loss of your loving dad Des, a true gentleman who was a very kind and loyal friend to so many people. I had many great chats with your dad and our two sons have great memories of him as a manager and mentor for his calm presence at matches and respect for his players and bringing the best from them, with the Under 10 hurlers in 2000, and the minor football team of 2011 that won the final.
Rest in peace Des, reunited with your beloved wife Mary, and forever in all our thoughts.
