My sincere sympathy to Don’s family and many friends. I had the privilege of nursing Don for many years. Despite his tragic health circumstances, Don maintained his wicked sense of humour and a tremendous empathy and generosity towards others in need. “And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance” Kahil Gibran. Don, I hope you now enjoy dancing to the music of the heavens.

I feel very lucky to have known him for a few years , first meeting Don in Hunters Hotel while chatting about nature & Gardening . I then went on to plant his garden in Delgany & enjoyed lots of coffee & conversation.
Such a lovely man & such positivity, thinking of you at this sad time .

Don was an entertaining, friendly colleague in The Irish Times. He had a very special, almost a unique, sense of humour, which I greatly valued. He was unimpressed by titles and pretensions and was very much his own man. He was personally well-disposed and helpful to me in all sorts of ways. I was very touched that even though he was very ill himself at that stage he took the trouble to phone and offer me condolences on my wife's death. He certainly brought a very special quality -- both as a person and a professional journalist -- to life in The Irish Times.

As he was my brother Joe's best friend we met on many occasions at family gatherings & many a New Year's eve in Joe's house.
He was always dressed well & I remember Joe slagging him about his cloak.
They are now having a good laugh together in the next world.

I am one of the nurses who looked after Don. During summer months, he always gifted the community nurses beautiful flowers from his amazing garden. He was always a generous client, insisting on the nurse having coffee and a fresh pastry. We had many interesting chats over the years. RIP Don.

Don was my editor when I was a young freelance reporter in The Irish Times. He could be tough at times, as he had high standards, but he pulled you up on things to help you improve, and of course to ensure what made it into the paper was good enough. He taught me a lot, and made me a better reporter, and eventually, a better editor. He was also very kind to me on a couple of occasions when his kindness mattered a great deal. May he rest in peace.
