Heartfelt condolences to Ann, Fergal, Damian and the entire Kelly family circle on Donal's passing. He was a wonderful human being who I was privileged to have as a colleague over three decades. As has been said by his sons, he treated everyone equally, took most seriously the difference between right and wrong and balanced his determination to live a good life with a self-deprecating sense of humour. His love of singing was infectious anytime I met him on the fringes of Philharmonic Choir rehearsals at RTE's Radio Centre. And it was a delight to watch him perform with the choir at the National Concert Hall.
Go gcloisfidh tú ceol binn ha flathais, a Dhomhnail a chara!
— Joe Little
Our most sincere condolences to Ann and family on the sad death of Donal. He was an immensely professional, fair and objective journalist throughout his time as a member of the RTE political team in Leinster House and ultimately as Political Editor. He never deviated from the high standards he set himself and successfully maintained a friendly and approachable disposition to all sides during some of the most turbulent days in Irish politics. He was a true gentleman.

Dear Ann, Fergal, Damian and families, I will be thinking of you today as you take leave of Donal. I hope that, alongside your sorrow in losing him, you will find consolation in remembering his lifelong dedication to you, his family. He always spoke so proudly and lovingly of you and showed great joy in his grandchildren.

I think that you will also be able to honour with great pride his remarkable career. His beautiful speaking voice and journalistic integrity were a dependable guide for the people of Ireland through many of the most significant milestones in modern Irish history.

On a personal level, he was one of the consistent voices and presences of my childhood and adult life and I have many happy memories of family get-togethers, lots of singing and wonderful times on the Shannon.

I am sorry that I can not be with you and with my mother Kitty today, but will be there online and in spirit. Ni bheidh a leithead aris ann.

Much love,

Aileen and family
