Then and now. He treated me as a Doctor and a houseguest, and had a great way about him. May he rest in peace knowing he was loved very much.

A brilliant physician, teacher and colleague. Also, great sense of fun and humour and totally loyal. We were both Registrars together to Prof Tim Counihan in the Mater Hospital in the late 1970’s. He also did brilliant groundbreaking work in Bermingham on the treatment of hypertension. This work, published in the BMJ, changed the management in everyday practice of acute hypertension and hypertensive crisis in hospitals throughout the world. A huge intellect and yet remarkably self deprecating and humble. Always there to help and support others. I haven’t seen Liam since the 1970’s although we are cousins. He stayed with my parents in London and I remember him as very tall (unlike his parents) and a gentle even tempered man. I was in my teens then. Rest in peace cousin.

I grew up around the hospital in Letterkenny and my late mother, Patricia, was a shrewd judge of character and skill in a doctor- she thought very highly of Liam and enjoyed working with him over many years.

I also spent time in Letterkenny University Hospital preparing for my final exams and always enjoyed the bedside teaching and clinical skills I was shown.

So many of my peer group who trained there subsequently spoke so highly of working with Liam.

Whilst he excelled professionally, he was first and foremost a dedicated family man and enjoyed his life outside of work too.

We were so sorry to hear about your loss and send you Eileen and your family our heart felt sympathies. Liam was a great man who stood up to his illnes with great fortitude, resilience and humour, he will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of spending time with him. Although our ways parted after we all left Birmingham I very much looked on him as a good friend and always enjoyed our time together be it at the BIHS meetings or more recently in London during one of his many therapy trips. We have all lost a very good friend but our lives I'm sure were made all the better for knowing him.
