Deepest condolences to Helen and all of Michael's family from a distant relation in the United States. Michael was a descendant of Benjamin Purser, myself of Benjamin's brother Edward. The brothers were of the 4th generation of Pursers in Ireland, Michael and I of the eighth generation. A few years ago I made contact with Michael and he very kindly dug out for me a copy of the diary of John Purser, father of Benjamin and Edward. This was provided to me in digital form by a nephew of Michael's, I believe, for which many thanks. The diary has been invaluable in my ongoing research into the life of Edward Purser. While I never met Michael we corresponded several times by postal mail. I feel I came to know him at least to an extent through those letters and through the lively and often wry humor of his books, which he also kindly sent me, particularly Jellett, O'Brien, Purser and Stokes (a treasure trove of family history). He also sent me a book of his wonderful short works of fiction largely set in South America. Reading through the many condolences, it is clear he touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

My sympathies to Paddy and family. I was fortunate enough to have Michael assigned as my brilliant final year supervisor for Computer Engineering in TCD in 1985. In particular, I remember him advising me on my career choice: 'The large german engineering company will always be there, while the opportunity to do a MSc may not.' I took his advice and never looked back. Thank you Michael.
— Colin Newman

Like so many graduates I was lucky enough to have had the support of Michael in starting my engineering career at Chaco Ltd having graduated under his tuition from Trinity. I have no end of appreciation for Michael’s support for Irish graduates in giving them a career start in Ireland in the economically challenging 80s. I will never forget those morning coal fires in his office on Fitzwilliam Sq. and his smiling face. Thank you Michael. Rest in peace.
— John Harvey

Last time I saw Michael was at Dad's last birthday party, nearly a year ago, where we surveyed a sunny scene and guzzled oysters together. I have known Michael all of my life. Scenes in the mountains, in the sea; at halloween and at the kitchen table on the one hand are flooding back, and on the other are now encased in memory. I can't believe he is gone. I loved his obstreperous humour and his kindly demeanour. Much love to you all -

Michael was my PhD supervisor - and I think it will be of little surprise to those who knew him to hear that he was unlike any other I knew or heard of since! After I took a brief trip to South America during my studies, Michael emailed me exclusively in Spanish for the following 6 months (despite me knowing almost no Spanish at the time!). Deciphering those emails (without the benefit of Google Translate) was just part of my training! Michael was a true polymath and from him I learned a multitude - from how to conduct a survey of wild birds to the fascinating history of his ancestors. Sincere condolences to Helen and all the family. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
