"The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto Him."WHAT IS Death? It is not a condition but a transition; not an abiding-place, but a passage; not a house, but a doorway. The Scripture refers to it as a birth--"the first-born from the dead"; as an exodus --"after my exodus," says Peter; as a striking of the tent--"I must shortly put off this tabernacle;" as the weighing of an anchor--"the time for me to loose-off from the shore is come." Each of these metaphors accentuates the fact that Death is but a momentary act. We are absent from the body one moment, present with the Lord the next.Persistent Personality. In that other field we shall surely recognise each other, and shall be as close akin, yea, closer than we were in long-past happy days, when heart to heart had sweet converse, or co-operated in useful ministry. Abraham will still be Abraham; Isaac, Isaac; and Jacob, Jacob. Not bodiless ghosts, but living personalities etherealised and transfigured.

What gain would it have been that Jesus promised the dying thief that he should be with Him in Paradise, if, when he reached there, he could not recognise the Lord?

Persistent Love. Love will never fail! But how can it exist without an object; and how can it forget! Why did Jesus promise the "many mansions," unless He meant that there should be homes!
— Friend of SMA

Sincere sympathy to Tony, Kevin ,the extended Smith family and the SMA community on the sad passing of Fr. Des. I had the privilege of his friendship ever since the late 1960’s when we worked together at a summer job in the library in UCC. Des had deep faith and was gentle, modest but thought provoking especially in one of his favourite past times ,discussing the religious and public affairs issues of the day . He had an innate ability to make a connection with your better side and always boiled down to the fundamentals of why we are here on our journey on earth . Des will be sorely missed by all but there is some consolation in that we do have a true friend at heaven’s door encouraging St. Peter to give us the benefit of the doubt and let us in . Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis .

Sincere sympathies to the family of Fr. Des on his passing. He was a true gentleman and a shining example of all that is good about the priesthood. Cloghans National School was privileged to have had Fr. Des in its midst for many years. He loved chatting to the children, sharing his love and extensive knowledge of history and his interest in all sports with them. He'd even arrive in his Cork jersey every now and again to get the banter going!
If a tricky question on religion cropped up in class, we would always save it for Fr. Des' visits and he never failed to find a suitable child centred answer. He was a kind and approachable priest with an openness ahead of his time. I have really great memories of him from school and also from my wedding where he mischievously advised my other half that 'a silent wife is a gift from the Lord' - I have quoted him many times since on this and it always brings a smile to our faces. . May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Fr. Des was a friend to many students and staff in Collinstown Park CC and to many who crossed his path. With the ever-graceful Sister Gabriel, in gentle companionship, they brought an abundance of calm and care to the school. With his presence, his quiet faith and a crossword half-finished in his coat pocket, he gave more than words ever could. Requiescat in pace.

I had the privilege of working alongside Fr Des for six years when he was School Chaplain in Collinstown Park Community College in Neilstown, in the 1990's. He was a wonderful colleague, always supportive and always ready to offer guidance, encouragement and help to everyone. His good humour and gentle manner made him approachable and a confidant to even the toughest or most sceptical of students and he left a great legacy among staff and students alike. I am honoured to have called him my friend.

May those who mourn the loss of Fr Des, particularly his family and confreres, be consoled and comforted by their great memories of a wonderful and inspiring man and the fun and laughter they shared. May the Lord now welcome Fr Des with the words 'Well done, good and faithful servant. Come now and share your Master's joy'
