I’m very sorry to hear about Fr Seani’s death.

We knew each other in Flannan’s and Maynooth, although - sadly - we lost touch after that. Seani was sensitive, idealistic, brave, open-minded, open-hearted and funny then. Reading all the tributes here, it’s clear that life didn’t change him one bit.

He honoured his priesthood and the diocese of Killaloe was lucky to have a man of his quality. God rest his gentle soul.
— Brendan McCarthy

Heartfelt sympathies to the Murphy family, to Bishop Monahan and my brother priests in the diocese of Killaloe on the death of Father Sean.
He was a few years ahead of me in Maynooth but we became friends almost immediately. I fondly remember those gatherings in his room and the wonderful conversations we had on the burning issues of the day.
I attended his ordination in Quin and enjoyed visiting him down the years.

When I heard yesterday that Seanie had passed it brought an 'ah no'. I have so many treasured "Seanie Murphy" memories that are scattered across the years since we first met in Maynooth back in the early eighties. It was always great to be around that infectious "Seanie Murphy" energy and the way he pointed by example towards living-life-juicy. He loved to laugh, and he delighted in instigating a laugh. He had a sharp, quick and insightful mind. When we got into more serious conversations his spirituality showed up as all about tending honest, open and time-soaked relationships - with his God and with others.

I was very lucky to have met Seanie. He surely was a force of nature when it came to providing pointers and good example. He would be quick to emphasis 'with' as opposed to 'for', but for me Seanie set down a unique and remarkable example of what it means to live a life 'for others'.

A heartfelt "thank you, Seanie" for all of it, and may you rest now in peace. My sympathy to his brother priests in the Killaloe diocese and to his religious sisters. My sympathy also to 'his' Murphy family that showed up in so many of his stories. I got to come along with him on a flying visit to Ballyvergin many years ago, and even the memory of how he went about that brings a smile. I disconnected just now from the Miltown Malbay parish webcam and that lovely funeral mass. I found myself hoping and praying that he would be there to help pull me in when my time comes. Buíochas le Dia.
