My mother gave me Jerome as a middle name and I was joyously curious to one day discover the man and the names meaning.
Jerome O'Reilly was a patient man, who could patiently not tolerate any foolery. His farm was his reality, anything outside of Cavan was a decadence. I remember one time at family wedding he ate a shortbread biscuit and had to lie down because of the richness of it (A True Cavan Man).
One thing Jerome didn't do is butter you up, least that be a waste of butter, but also compliments have more value when they're rare. as a young boy I'd work Jerome's farm on my holidays and day I was bestowed with a true token of the man's appreciation. The Hollow Plastic Stick.
If you've never worked on a dairy farm you don't know the joys of rotating the cows to different fields, and while driving them on you need a good stick at you side. Jerome always held this very particular Hollow Plastic Stick and if you were doing good in his eyes, one day he'd give it to you.
In this scenario you could say the carrot has actually become the stick
These days with Jerome and my grandmother Vera on the farm will always be fond memories that I can dive into on those rainy wet grey skied evenings with howling wind and nettle stings all over my ankles.
I'll remember seeing how much sugar I could sneak into my porridge, being woken up at the crack of dawn with his trademark slogan "SHINE AND RISE" and how he used to send me in the Bullpen to grab Billy's nose ring.

Your unique conversation and vitality will be missed by all but never forgotten.
RIP Jerome. Such a character and thankfully lots of cherished memories. Say hello to mum and the rest of the family. In our thoughts xx
Sorry I missed Jerome’s funeral. Wasn’t about. His parables were unique, gestured out in such style you were convinced. Such humour is the comparisons. Alas there are not enough Jeromes
He was one of a kind

So sad to hear of the death of Uncle Jerome. He formed part of the bedrock of my childhood, as did visiting the farm where my mother, Christina O’Reilly, grew up. She would weep buckets saying goodbye to him and always told us how handsome he was.
I remember him squirting me with milk from the cows udder and once when riding in his tractor as a young child, I made the mistake of leaning against the door in the cabin that was fastened with a piece of string. I fell out and was going under the big wheel when his left arm shot out and grabbed me around the neck. So he saved my life. Though arguably endangered it too. Great memories. I’m glad my kids got to meet him and see the farm before the end.
RIP

My memories of Jerome are frozen in time, for me he was a fun loving and great craic. During a storm as we sat indoors by the range with him faking terror and fear that the corrugated roof would attract the lightning. But mainly it was the Sunday nights dances as we toured over Cavan. Those nights were great fun with him, I felt very proud to walk in with him to numerous dance halls, he was a handsome man. You have all heard the story of me scaring the life out of him, as I had missed my lift back with him from a dance in Clones. I appeared at the small bedroom window in a silhouette from, with my long hair Jerome mistook me for a banshee. We laughed about it a lot that night.
Rest in peace Uncle Jerome.
Lots of happy memories of childhood visits to the farm when we were growing up, and of wet afternoons listening to your tales.
So glad my own children got to meet you too and listen to your stories when you came to visit Dad in Virginia, and that they also got the chance to come and see you at the farm and visit the site of so many of the family stories they have heard while growing up.

Sincere sympathy to Eithne, Vera, nieces, nephews and extended family on the death of Jerome. May Jerome rest in Peace.
"We're off to Cavan" only meant one thing in our 1970s childhood summers. Mum was taking us to see Jerome and Gerard at their Cootehill farm. Bundled into the VW dormobile/campervan, the gang would leave our Finnea base and fly along those tree- and hedge-lined (and if sunny), light-speckled roads of the the Breffni County, going our own way with Fleetwood Mac. No phone lived at either end of the journey, so our arrival must have been unexpected.
It was always a full-on day with the uncles. Lots of adults/near-adults/wanna-be adults debating around the kitchen table, chasing chickens, searching for eggs, boiling eggs, eating eggs, trips to the giant milking shed on the hill, being terrified of the bull (or the possibility of one in the following field), finding a stick to emulate Gerald's walking set-up, marvelling at the slurry, peppering Jerome with questions (not so much Gerard!), crossing the yard to investigate the old house of mum's childhood, and board games in the backroom whilst debating continued next door. And with the light fading (or even gone if one Ulster Question answer went to extra time), we'd all head home. It was only an hour's drive, but us younger ones had to be roused from deep sleep at its end, such was the energy expended that day.
It was lovely to meet you afresh in adulthood, Jerome.
RIP Jerome. Our thoughts to those who loved him, especially to Vera and Eithne.

Sad to hear of Jeromes passing, he was a towering figure to me as a nephew. Watching Jerome and Gerard have lunch was a source of amazement to 8yo me, Gerard and his layers of butter and sugar on bread, and Jerome with his observations on farming, the weather, and the day.
Bless you and RIP Jerome x

Jerome's farm was the setting of many childhood adventures, where my cousins and friends and I would wile away the rain soaked summer days until the cows came home.
Unfortunately, those cows had other ideas.
Jerome had a particular misfortune/talent in rearing jail-breaking cattle; but, some of my most treasured memories were formed in the chaos of locating and escorting back home Billy the Bull or a herd of headstrong heifers.
I hope heaven is full of socks without holes, thick slices of buttered white bread, and the knowledge that you are greatly missed.

Remember many times helping on the farm and your tall stories and saying how Nettle soup cured all illness!
You always had a welcome all 10 of us when we arrived!
I recall you telling Kit Serry many times how Cavan men did farming differently to West Meath men!
Great memories and will be missed by all

Very sad to hear of the passing of my Uncle Jerome. I remember the fun my brother Ronan and I had when we visited the farm for two summers when we were growing up. Jerome and Gerard would let us herd and milk the cows and ride on the tractor. Quite the character.
May he rest in peace.

Uncle Jerome - you had an impact on Corragarry/Ireland/People and your unique sense of humor.
Always a Joy to get ya Newspapers and watch and talk to you about every article you consumed.
Always enjoyed my stays in Corragarry as a kid - as a Farm Hand/Muck in/Exploring the working Farm (even did a school Class Paper on the workings of your Farm - thanks for your efforts on that - got me a A+ )
May Jerome rest in peace reunited with his mum and dad, Brothers and Sisters (my Mum Moira O'Reilly).
Love and prayers to Clan O'Reilly (especially his Sisters Vera & Eithne).

Jerome you are in everyone's thoughts.
My earliest memories of Jerome are of being on his Corrygarry farm and Jerome always telling these elaborate tall tales of previous times or explaining how things work – I never quite knew if he was telling me the truth and I still wonder! I remember the disappointing taste of the cattle feed he got me to try as he advised me that he just had the same for breakfast…. That smile and glint in his eyes were very persuasive to the 8-year-old me.
May Jerome rest in peace.

Jerome was a great man. I grew up going to his farm when I was a young boy. Some of my earliest memories are eating porridge at his table with my grandmother, his sister, Vera.
My cousins Livia and Milo would come along in the summertime also and we would pass the hours herding cows to Jerome’s barn or fields until the sun went down.
Jerome showed us how to roam the land around Corragarry and he had a sense of humor with lines such as “Make yourself generally useful”.
Years later I got to visit him as an adult and stay over on the farm once more. He was a kind host and had the same routine as a decade earlier. He liked listening to the obituaries on the radio and nodding when he knew the name and saying “ah, so it goes”.
He also took us to mass each Sunday when we were kids and he would say “whatever you do, keep your hands out your pockets and look straight forward when yer sitting in the pew. Don’t be looking behind you. Stand straight.”
I hope he had a great send off at his local church, and that no one had their hands in their pockets. I’ll remember Jerome’s life lessons forever.
Rest in Peace, Uncle Jerome.

Condolences to all the family. Rest in peace Jerome..🙏
Gone too soon, my earliest memories of Jerome was when I was only about 10 years old. We were in the milk shed and there was cow slurry everywhere so you can imagine very dirty muddy boots. As one of the cows was being milked it started to pee at the same time, and Jerome seezed the opportunity using the giant yellow stream of water much to my amazement to clean the cow slurry off his boots 😂. RIP great uncle.
