Dear Lorna, Helen, James & Des,
Our deepest sympathies on the passing of your Dad Jimmy. He was such a gentle man and a wonderful mentor to us all in Pinewood. He had such a hearty laugh it cheered everyone up always. He was a brilliant sportsman & I well remember the parent-children soccer matches on the Green. Or the evenings he would tell us of his rugby days. Jimmy was a skilled gardener & the aroma from his pipe drifting across the gardens in the evenings brought a calm reflective security. Blessings to you all and to Jimmy and Anna’s Grandchildren. May Jimmy Rest in Eternal Peace with Anna, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhilís, Dominic Catherine & Family.

Helen I was so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. I’m very sorry for your loss. Sincere condolences to you and your family.
— Suzanne Hallahan ( née O’Brien )
I was saddened to read of the passing of Jimmy. We worked briefly together in Dublin in the 1980s. In keeping with the sentiments and comments of his many former colleagues, Jimmy was the essence of the 'gentleman of the Excise'. He was always the helpful colleague, especially with officers of little experience wo were 'learning the ropes'. Jimmy's essential character of goodness and kindness will be hard to replicate.

My sincere condolences to the McGovern family.
— Thomas Hempenstall, Customs and Excise

To all the McGovern Clan:
As a young Clare man working in trade in Dublin, Jimmy educated me in the realm of customs law, practice and procedure. He became a great mentor and friend. Many a game of golf I had with him in Birr whenever he and Anna came down for the weekend. I lost touch with him in recent years and was keen to know how he was doing. I was so sorry to hear the news of his passing. A gold standard customs officer. And a gold standard human being. You should all be so proud. Bless his sweet soul.
