So sorry to learn of Joe’s passing, my sincere condolences to Bridie, Ivan, Richard and extended family. From those Christmas Day lunches we used to share many years ago to more recent years and chance meetings at the market or on the prom I always enjoyed talking film, books and life with him. Sincere condolences to Bridie and family on the death of dear Joe.
He was a powerhouse in the development of the FIFS in Ireland.
(Now access>cinema). I remember waiting/listening at Board Meetings to what he might say on a given topic…
He would always ‘nail it’ in a very kind patient intelligent and accurate way.
He was a colossus in helping to facilitate the rapid provision of cultural cinema in Ireland.
May he rest in peace.
— Finola Costello Picture House Wexford
To Bridie, Ivan, Richard, and extended families. To hear of Joe’s passing is a cause of great sadness. Coming to college in the early 1970s, he kept many of his best lines for the impromptu seminars in P.J. Flaherty’s in Lower Salthill, and for heady discussions after screenings of the (then) UCG Film Society. Joe’s insights into film and literature (particularly the writings of Joseph Conrad) were only matched by his intellectual curiosity and the warmth of his friendship. He was the best of company, and his loss will be felt deeply by all who knew and valued him.

Hi Bridie, Ivan and Richard

I wanted to pass on my condolences on Joe's death. I remember him being so helpful in providing Neil and me with advice and insight when we were researching cultural cinema provision in Ireland. He was also rigorous and independent in thought and always looked at the broader picture.

Through his contributions to Galway Film Society, access>CINEMA (formerly Federation of Irish Film Societies), and Galway Film Fleadh, he gave audiences in Galway and Ireland the opportunity to see a broader range of World cinema. The arts and film in particular, owe him a debt of gratitude.

With all best wishes at this difficult time, Maretta.
