Always loved seeing new prospects in boxing, John Cooney was one of them. A disciplined, consistent trainer, a relentless fighter and never a boring moment watching him in the ring.
It’s so awful to see a lad so young lose his life. Really heartbreaking stuff and I’m so devastated for all his family and friends.

I was devastated to hear the news about John, he was such a gent and ran a great show in Upper Cuts in Clarinbridge, it was great experience for any boy to get his hair cut there. I only met him on Shop street where he cut my hair before Christmas . Had a lovely chat with him- May he Rest in Peace .

John was a lovely bloke, down to earth and fascinating to listen to whilst he gave me a haircut. His devotion to the sport he clearly loved was infectious. I only met him a few times but I was genuinely heartbroken to hear the news.

So sorry for the loss of your lovely son John in the awful tragedy in the boxing tournament in Belfast that night of Saturday 2nd of February.

To John's parents Hughie,Tina and his brothers and his lovely fiancée Emmaleen, all his relatives and friends. It won't be the same without John again. I watched the lovely video mass of the funeral and such great loss to you all.
I say he was a lovely young man, kind and friendly to everyone who met him through his lifetime when he did, friendly with everyone and enjoyed living in his career with boxing and a barber.
