Sincere condolences to Gerard, Mary, Fiona, James, Frank and extended family. John was a lovely, kind and helpful person and these characteristics are reflected by his siblings.

Many years ago the Phelan's lived in Windsor Ave. and my family lived on the same Ave. I went to school with James (St. Joseph's C.B.S., Fairview - both Primary & Secondary) and John, who was a few years younger attended the same. James, John and I served as altar boys in Fairview Church for a number of years and they were great friends to keep company with.

As we got older and as life draws us in different directions, I would meet John briefly 'in passing' and he was always cheerful and would give me a warm welcome. He was also very caring to the older people in the community over the years.

No doubt he is resting in eternal peace at present.
— James O' Connor (ex. Windsor Ave.)
Sincere condolences to the Phelan family.I knew John when we were growing up in fairview in the late 70s..early 80s.We started in St Josephs secondary school September 79.As luck would have it.We ended up sitting together for the first two years of our time there.I got to know John during that time.I remember him as a very warm and kind person. He also had a great wit and sense of humour.

When we left our school days behind us.i would often meet him round fairview.Of course John would always have time for a chat.We would talk about the old days and discuss the fortunes of the class of 85.Thats how i remember John Phelan.A really great guy and a true legend
Rest in peace my friend you will never be forgotton.

My sincere condolences to John's family, I had the pleasure of knowing John through his Slimming World journey when I became the consultant in the Erins Isle group in 2017 until 2021. He was such a kind genrous man who was greatly loved by his SW family, esp the 7.30pm group and his weightloss journey inspired so many people. I remember him ringing me with such pride to let me know he had received his 10 stone award shortly after i had stepped away from the role . He loved his friends, family, work colleagues and SW family so much and always spoke highly of everyone, such a helpful friendly guy who went out of his way to help people . When I last spoke to John, he was giving me advice on which counties to move to when i was relocating from Dublin but my most precious memory is when John came to pay his respects at my own Dads funeral, when I hadn't seen him since leaving SW, it meant the world to me that he was still thinking of me. You will be greatly missed by all who loved you John.
Rest in peace my friend .
— Jillian Connaughton

Our sincere sympathies to all of John's family on his untimely passing.

John was a man with the biggest heart and was at his happiest when helping others in whatever way he could. He was the man with the contacts and he was always delighted to help you source match tickets or concert tickets. He loved surprising you with specific presents for your hobbies, or driving you home from nights out - the list was endless.

During his many years with Shelbourne Football Club and with Donnelly Fresh Foods, John was at the centre of everything, continually looking out for the businesses and the most obliging when it came to helping solve a problem. Everyone in the businesses knew John and John knew everyone, he didn't miss a trick and he was always first up to help out in whatever way he could.

They say "giving is better than receiving" and that epitomized John. That's the life he led. He will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace John

My deepest sympathy goes to John’s siblings, Gerard, Mary, Finn, James, and Frank. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear brother. I met John these past few years through my good friend Paul Plunkett when I visited him in Dublin. Every time I saw John, he was always helpful and showed nothing but kindness to me. I was not surprised to read all the condolences written to find a common theme, “an absolute gentleman.” I hope that each of you will take some comfort in knowing that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
