Sincere condolences to Anne and the wider family.
John Stephen was my teacher and headmaster at Knocknagree NS. As a young kid I never fully appreciated his passion for eduction, in particular, Irish, History and Drama (and the odd quiz). Looking back on it now, he was the best teacher I ever had and gave his pupils the best possible start in life. His impact on our lives will live on long after his passing. RIP.

Sincere Condolences to Anne and all John Stephens relatives and friends. I remember my father brought me along to one of their quiz nights in Killarney once I was way out of my league.
Sincere sympathy and heartfelt prayers to Anne ... and to the extended O'Sullivan Family members on the sad departure of John Stephen to his Heavenly Home. R.I.P.. A True Gentleman, John was always so very friendly and welcoming with a wonderful smile reflecting his inspiring and uplifting attitude to life. An outstanding Ambassador for Rathmore and for Kerry, John has left many special memories not only as a Principal Teacher supreme but as such a gifted Writer and Historian. The very meaningful symbols of his inspiring life at his Funeral Mass recalled his many precious talents and his exemplary dedication to his magnificent writings over many decades. I especially recall John's superbly valuable contribution in the preparation of Dan Cronin's book "In the Shadow of the Paps". May the gentle Soul of John Stephen rest in peace having wonderfully enriched the lives of many. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
Sincere sympathy to the O'Sullivan family on the passing of John Stephen who meant so much to so many of us. I was lucky enough to have the chance to tell him this a couple of years ago and he responded with his customary modesty and grace. RIP.
Sincere condolences to Anne, relatives and friends of John Stephen. It was a privilege to know him.
John Stephen acted as Club Chairman from 1967 to 1969 and Rúnaí a Chlub from 1973 to 1974. He served as juvenile secretary and guided underage teams in Rathmore and Knocknagree, where he taught most of his career.
John Stephen has endowed Rathmore with a priceless legacy in the form of a 596-page magnum opus entitled 'Aililiú Rathmore - a history of Gaelic activities in the parish'.
This book chronicled the Club's first century, from 1888 until 1988.
Club Chairman Micheál Ó Súilleabháin, in his introduction to the book, stated, 'As you enjoy this book, it will become evident that many people have contributed a great deal to our club over the past 100 years, none more so than Seán Ó Súilleabháin…….'
How fitting and true!
The Club will be forever grateful to John Stephen for undertaking and completing this mammoth commission.
John Stephen's love for amateur drama involved him as a prominent figure in the successful Tops of the Parish series, delivering much-needed funding for the Club. He produced and acted in numerous novelty acts for 'Scór' and mentored many young people participating in 'Scór na bPáistí'.
John Stephen's great intellect and general knowledge were invaluable to the Rathmore Scór Quiz team, of which he was a member. They won their first All-Ireland in 1995. Subsequently, they triumphed in numerous County, Munster and All Ireland 'Scór' and 'Seachtain na Gaeilge' quiz competitions.
Sincere sympathy to his sister Ann, his relatives and many friends.

Such a knowledgeable gentleman. His history of Rathmore GAA "Aililiù Rathmore" which I used as a reference on so many occasions is not only a detailed record of gaelic sport and culture in his Áit Dùchais but it also serves as an encyclopaedia of the GAA in Kerry for well over a century.

I had the good fortune to attend Knocknagree NS in the late 60s, mostly 70s. At the time there was a full cohort of excellent teachers, no ‘weak link’, all of whom gave us an education which I realised was uncommon only when we got to secondary school. Mr O was the one who opened up the world to us, had us doing projects on Ancient Egypt or The Romans in 4th class. And everyone got a different project so we could learn from each other! When we did projects on different counties in Ireland, he would order the newspaper (did he pay for these himself?) from that county so that we could incorporate it into our sources. I remember him ordering the Connaught Tribune for my project on Galway.
We were light years ahead of the curriculum! The best, most inspiring teacher I ever had. RIP
