I am so sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Luke Murtagh. I can barely find the words to describe Luke’s immense contribution to the field of adult education. I had the privilege of working with Luke, through AONTAS, for over a decade. His vast knowledge of adult education and policy, which he so generously shared was exceptional. Like many others, I reread his PhD thesis many times, such a wealth of information made accessible through detailed work that will benefit adult educators into the future. I was honoured to collaborate with Luke on an article to mark the 50th anniversary of AONTAS. His passion for history, and getting to the truth through respectful and robust debate were just some of his many talents that we benefited from. His long term contribution to the Adult Learner Journal as an editorial board member, his valued membership of AONTAS, and his lifelong dedication to empowering adult learners have left an indelible mark on the education community.

I extend my deepest condolences to his family during this very difficult time.

Luke’s legacy will continue to support the transformative work he championed. RIP

Deepest sympathy to Anne and all the family on your sad loss. Luke was an utter gentleman whose friendship and counsel I greatly valued. I worked with Luke on several projects and it was a pleasure and an education to do so. Luke had a clear vision of what Ireland could be and how education and training could facilitate us achieving our goals. Only. the other day I was re-reading a 2008 research report around what we needed to do to ensure that newcomers to our shores could most effectively become proficient in English - work that Luke directed. Had we followed Luke's prescience, we would have been ready for the huge task we have today to provide English language skills to our ever growing numbers of immigrants. It can be truly said that we shall not see Luke's like again. May the good God grant Luke eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him.

My sincere sympathy to the Murtagh family at this sad time. It was my privilege to have known Luke as a student and colleague. He was always a delight to be around. His scholarly researcher for his doctoral thesis broke new ground. But perhaps most importantly he was a wonderful human being. His capacity to engage wholeheartedly with everyone he met transcended cultural and geographic divides. We worked together on a project in Zambia and Malawi and our colleagues in both countries always asked after him. They too are saddened to hear of his death and send their condolences to his loved ones. Rest in peace Luke.
