Is brónach, léanmhar an scéal faoi bhás Mháirtín a chloisteáil. Déanaim chomhbhrón ó chroí le Mary, a dhlúthcara ionúin dílis, le Seán, an tSr.Frances, Máire agus Val, lena mhuintir uilig,a chairde sna bólaí thart faoi Bhéal Átha na Muice agus, go deimhin, ar fud na bhfud, cibé áit ina raibh sé i mbun foghlamtha, oibre nó feachtais tírgrácha. Cara ní ba uaisle, ionraice, iontaofa,lándairíre níor casadh orm fad mo shaoil. Fear nár thug cúl le cine, Gael go smior nár chaill a mhisneach, a bhí dílis agus omósach dá dhúchas is dhíre. Choinnigh Máirtín a chinnlae i nGaeilge nuair a bhí sé ag obair i Kenya; mura bhfuil sé sin i bhfianaise ar a ghrá don tír agus don teanga ní lá go fóill é. Ba ghniomhaire díograiseach, dúthrachtach é Máirtín i gConradh na Gaeilge, Glòr na nGael ,Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Éireann, Cumann Drámaíochta, Coláistí Samhraidh agus eile. Chuir sé mé inaithne do phlúr na gcarad i measc a chomharsan nach ndéanfad dearmad go deo orthu.

Is danaid daoibh a bhás ach tá a chúram uile déanta dá chlann, dá chomharsain,dá scoláirí,don náisiún. Is ionúin le Dia amhlaidh é. Tá sé i gcaladh ciúin na síoraíochta. Go lonraí solas suthain air i gcomhluadar na bhfíréan, i bhfocair a mhuintir atá imithe roimhe ar shlí na fírinne. A Mháirtín, go bhfeice tú Glóire Dé, go gcloise tú ceol na n-Aingeal. Suaimhneas síoraí tabhair dó a Thiarna .
Le gach dea-ghuí,Máirtín. Co.an Chláir.
— Máirtín Ó Catháin

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Máirtín, God Rest His Dear Soul. I did not know him personally and I did not have the privilege of working with him but I feel as if I knew him well from the very positive attitudes that survived him in Coláiste Éanna. Many is the pleasant anecdote I heard about his time in the school and I was acutely aware of the high esteem in which he was regarded by his colleagues and former students. Let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers for Máirtín and you all at this sad time.
Go raibh leaba i measc na naomh ag an bhfear uasal séimh,

My earliest memory of Martin is possibly when I was six years old. He had just returned to Ireland from Kenya and was driving a Beatle. This would have been around 1979 in Ballina. Either of these would have marked Martin out as the adventurer he was.

There are many more memories. I remember dodging getting pulled into collecting for goal at Christmas. Martin approached the Christmas as if it was another marathon. He didn’t know how to do things by half’s. I was afraid I’d be collecting for seven days s straight over my Christmas holidays. Although we all knew Martin was ill his death still seemed untimely. It had seemed he wasn’t supposed to die just yet. He always seemed he had a few more miles left in him. His passing has still come as a shock.

In 1990 before I started college I was brought onboard the research team for the book about Sean O Ruadhain Martin was writing. My task was to search in all Irish Press Newspapers over a 30 year span looking for articles and references to him. I probably spent too much time reading about the day to day accounts of the Second World War.

Martin found great companionship with Mary. Mary has brought years of joy, warmth and in later years caring for Martin. Martin was a fortunate man. He will be dearly missed but not forgotten. RIP.
