Difficult to come to terms with the death of such a pleasant, vibrant and cherished member of our family.
Monica was as bright as a button always smiling and showing interest and concern for others. A brilliant conversationalist who loved to chat on any subject. The admiration expressed by former pupils and parents from the various schools is indicative of the esteem with which she was held.
Condolences to Paddy and his entire family. Also sisters Rosaline and Dympna McGahern.
May she rest peacefully in Craughwell with our brother and parents whose mutual respect and love was evident since they met their first daughter in law Monica.
— Peggy/James

I was truly sorry to hear of the death of Mrs Gilligan. She taught my daughter in the Presentation school and was everythiing you'd want in a teacher, kind, compassionate, fair and engaging and with the interest of the child at the heart of everything. I had many conversations in the years after when we'd bump into each other on the town, she was just so lovely, and never forgot her pupils.
Mrs Gilligan you touched the lives of many in Drogheda - thank you.
Thinking of her beloved family.
May she get her eternal rewards in heaven.
— Marie Kierans Regan

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs Gilligan. She taught me over 30 years ago in Ballymakenny and she was a wonderful, dedicated and inspiring teacher. She said words of encouragement to me that I remember to this day. She was the sort of teacher who made a lasting impression on all of the students who were lucky to spend a year with her. I am very sorry for the great loss to her family.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Monica, and our deepest sympathies go out to Paddy, to Paula and Patrick, her daughter-in-law Darina, and to the rest of the Gilligan and McGahern family. To be in Monica’s company and enjoy her conversation as we did in Carrick-on-Shannon only a few years ago, was to meet one of those thoughtful people whose warmth and humour live on, even when they have left the room.

It is seldom in life you meet someone like Ms Glligan.

She was a 360 person the full package. Gifted as a teacher kind and humble.

She taught us in the classroom with dignity and grace and made us think outside the classroom too.

Her historical trips were fantastic and energetic and so was she.

RIP

Sincere sympathy to all the Gilligan family.
Such a huge loss to you all.
Mrs Gilligan was one of a kind.
She truly understood her pupils and showed such empathy and kindness to them.
She focussed more on the childs personality and skills rather than academic abilities.
Her approach had a very productive result.
