To Bishop Donal’s family, to Bishop Brendan, all of the priests, religious & laity of the diocese & further afield;
our sincere condolences to you all on his sad passing.
Bishop Donal had a gentle disposition & communicated a deep faith in his homilies. He was humble too as he seemed genuinely surprised when I commented on one of them!
I am sure the Lord will have said to him, ‘Well done, good & faithful servant’. May he rest in peace.
In our prayers.
— Rachel, Deirdre & Jimmy O’ Keeffe, St. John’s Cathedral.

Bishop Donal's episcopal motto was "Veritas in Caritate", taken from St Paul to Ephesians: "if we live by the truth and in love we shall grow in all ways". He was not to know when he chose it that, 14 years later, he was to become Bishop of Limerick whose diocesan college has exactly the same motto. Neither could he have known that his arrival in Limerick in 1996 was the year when the College was celebrating the 200th anniversary of its founding. He was a great friend and supporter of the College during his episcopal ministry. He lived by his motto and,in his own humble way, was an inspiration to all who had the good fortune to work with him. He also leaves an impressive legacy of significant and thought-provoking publications. Sincere sympathy to his family and the very many friends who mourn his loss.
