I was so sad to hear this news. I only had the pleasure of meeting Nigel once earlier this year. He left a lasting impression. He was warm, kind and hospitable, welcoming me to his home. Over the few hours I spent with him and his friend Amanda (my cousin), he was smart, funny and easy to talk to. He spoke with such love about Michaela and George. It was clear that he adored them both. My deepest sympathy to Michaela, George and everyone who loved Nigel. The light of Heaven to you, Nigel - I hope you have the best bed in Heaven.
— Annette Condon, Cahir

I was a friend of Nige's at Downside; in the same year and house. We shared a love of music, and, on occasion, made up ditties together, as well coining a small canon of nonsense words (Eeebo the Crow etc....!).

Despite an at-times-worrying preoccupation with alcohol, his raging intellect was always to the fore, knocking the rest of us mere mortals into a cocked hat. Not sure he read any of his A Level English Literature books, but I do remember him cramming Brodie's Notes the week before the exams. I'll bet he got an A!

He directed me in the House play competition in 1978/9 (Aristophanes' The Frogs), which we won, even though Nige was in the pub on performance night! What more could he have done to help us by then anyway!!!! He made us all laugh like a drain. A lovely bloke, whom, despite the decades, I have never stopped thinking about.

My sincerest of condolences to Michaela and George
— Mark Beattie
So sad to hear of this. I was at school with him for two years and he was tremendous fun. Glad to have briefly reconnected online. Love to Michaela, George and all his family and friends.
— Kieran Balfe
A man who was impossible to forget. I was at Downside with Nige and most of our shared experience involved alcohol.
We made contact on Messenger a couple if years ago and now of course I wish I had visited Waterford. Too bloody late.
Nigel seemed to exist entirely outside the school or any other societal rules but not in such a way as to cause hurt to anyone except perhaps himself.
A beautiful youth - much loved and admired - often talked about with awe.
— Mark Farmer

Dear Michaela and George,
I first met Nigel in 1967 or 1968: he lived in the same road as me in Gerrards Cross. So I can count him as one of my oldest friends. We shared an interest in broken old go-carts (as you do when you're a 6 or 7-year-old kid), which we'd buy (we invested in a pedal-powered Jeep, no steering wheel included, for two bob) with our pocket money at church fêtes, and imagine one day that we'd do them up and turn our 'fleet' into a successful transport empire. Yes, Nigel was never short on imagination or ambition or, indeed, a sense of humour and of the ridiculous. When I think about him now, he was really the perfect childhood friend. He was fun, smart, honourable and loyal: Nigel stood up for me against the class bullies. But most of all, I'll remember the delight of hearing an unexpected ring of the doorbell and his distinctive voice asking my mum, "Can Harry play?" I knew that we were about to emark on more adventures, some worthy of Enid Blyton. More recently, I was so delighted that he'd found fulfillment and happiness in Ireland and had been blessed with you, Michaela and George, in his life. Until we meet again, Nigel, I shall miss your unique (and wise) take on the strange world we have lived in. My wonderful friend, may you rest in peace.
— Harry Burke
Such a shock to hear of Nigel’s death. I was at Downside with him and he was a regular visitor to the now demolished Britannia Arms in Chillcompton, and was a good friend, naughty, intelligent and uniquely scruffy but well known and well liked. I so hope his death was without suffering. My thoughts are with you all. Andrew x
