My deepest condolences to Olive and all the Fox family on the passing of Prof Fox. Not only was he a giant of Irish science who made enormous contributions to the field of dairy science (for which he is renowned, and will be long remembered, worldwide) but he was a genuine polymath who loved to share his endless curiosity and his knowledge on a huge range of subjects. In particular, he loved to encourage the learning of others, and I myself never had a meeting with him where I did not feel I learned something new.

It is genuinely the end of an era.

May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy to Olive, Kathy, Deirdre, PD and the extended Fox family on the sad passing of much loved Professor Fox. I was truly privileged to have PF as an inspiring lecturer when an undergraduate, as a mentor when a postgraduate and as a wonderful colleague and friend for many years. PF was globally recognized as a leading expert in Dairy Science and his publications are core references for students, researchers, academics and industry all over the world. However, PF had little interest in fame. He was a true University Professor who championed the quest for knowledge and who believed that his most important job was to educate and train the next generation of dairy scientists and researchers- in many ways his greatest legacy. PF was immensely curious about the world around him and had other interests of course including history, politics, and sport and we enjoyed many lively discussions in the tea room on topics ranging from role of the Lombard invaders to whether Tiger Woods was indeed the best golfer - an education in itself. The tributes listed here from all over the world and the attendance by so many of PF ‘s former students, colleagues and representatives from the food industry at the funeral ceremonies over the past few days are testimony to the respect and fondness we all had for Prof. A truly remarkable man who had such a hugely positive impact on so many lives.
Rest easy Prof. and thank you. You will be greatly missed.
