Sincere sympathies to Ann, Eoin, Niall, Aoife and Clare, and to Dermot’s dear friends, on the loss of a truly remarkable human being. A pioneering historian of great breadth and depth, he was also a wise and encouraging mentor, and became a great friend. Despite his very busy life, he was generous with his time. Gifted with great intuition, he was kind and compassionate towards those who found life difficult. He also had a great sense of humour. He adored his wonderful family, whose hospitality I deeply appreciate. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
Sincere sympathies to Brendan and all the family on the sad passing of Dermot, may he rest in peace.
My sympathy to Ann and family on Dermot's passing. We were students together in Group VIIIB (the somewhat oddly named 'History and Modern Irish History') in UCD. Fondest memories
Dear Ann,
We are so sorry to hear of Dermot`s passing and send our deepest sympathy to you, Eoin, Niall, Aoife and Clare and all the extended family at this very sad time.
We cherish the very happy memories of so many interesting discussions and great evenings we had with you both and Gearoid, and hope that all the wonderful tributes from so many people will bring you some comfort.
Sending you our kindest regards, Meadhbh and Jim

My sincerest condolences to Ann and the family on the loss of Dermot.
You have been in my thoughts in these sad days. Dermot was a brilliant scholar and a noble and generous human being.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in BA at Universidad del Salvador, Argentina. and he was always so kind and generous, answering questions and giving advice on my research. Since I was not able to attend the SILAS 2023 Conference in Galway, he even sent me a book through a common friend. I will always cherish the few moments we shared with him in BA. What a privilege!
Dear Dermot, I had hoped to see you and Ann once more in my city. I am so sad we won't spot your Panama hat on the streets of Buenos Aires again. Rest in Peace.

I add my voice to the many former students of professor Keogh - I had the great privilege of having him as a professor in UCC in the very early 00s. Apart from being so very knowledgable and interesting, he was extremely approachable and kind and helped this nervous and overwhelmed undergrad feel at ease. Over 20 years after being both his BA and MA student, what stands out in my memory is his generosity in sharing his time, his encouragement, and how he made a 19-year old feel that her opinions and questions mattered. I subsequently pursued a career in research and academia, where I actively try to emulate his kindness and encouraging ways in my interactions with nervous students. I want to pass on my sincere condolences to his family on the loss of such a great man.
My deepest condolences to Fiona and Dermot's wide circle of family and friends. What a remarkable man.
A lovely kind man.
I feel privileged to have known and worked with him.
Rest in Peace Dermot.

I was very sorry to hear of Prof. Keogh's passing. He was a wonderful lecturer and made my time in UCC and the European Studies Dept. always interesting. He kept us on our toes. May he rest in peace. He will be missed by all his past students. Sincere condolences to the Keogh family.
My sincere condolences to Ann and Dermot's whole family - I am so sorry to learn of his passing only today. It was my great pleasure to meet Ann and Dermot many times in Rome at the Irish College, and his historical insights, kindness, and humour were of great support to me when I was working there. May he rest in peace.
It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Professor Keogh on reading his beautiful obituary in the Irish Times. I was very lucky to have him lecturing to me in my undergraduate years 1978-1981 in U.C.C. Actually it was never a lecture, he was just telling a story and was so engaging and erudite I hung on his every word. My sympathies to all the family.Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
My family and I met Dermot and Ann in Buenos Aires and had the most wonderful night in their company. Dermot brought us to his favourite pizzeria , which he told us was also the favourite restaurant of Gabriel Batistuta- Batigol. He was wonderful with my 12 year old son and was so engaging and humble. It was my good fortune to cross his path, however, briefly .
A good man.
Que descanse en paz

Dear Ann, and Eoin, Niall, Aoife and Clare, and all your families,
Living in Australia, we were so grateful that we had been able to see you Ann and Dermot in Cork in early July this year, when we came across from France. It was a joy.
Dermot sounded almost his vibrant self when we spoke to him briefly across the miles just a few days before he died, telling us of the family, the grandchildren, and his strong wish to be at his computer working in spite of his condition.
He was a brilliant scholar whose interdisciplinary mind enhanced his view of Irish history, a mind illuminated by art, literature, poetry, languages, humour, conversation, music, sport, travel – to Italy, Argentina, France, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Spain – to name a few.
He was a man without borders, endlessly curious and compassionate.
We were honoured and privileged to know him - in the company of so many others.
We were honoured too to witness Dermot's funeral from afar, in Melbourne - thank you from the depths of our hearts.
In deepest sympathy Ann, Elizabeth and Brendan

I worked with Dermot in another career, as copy boy supplying copy from the wire-room to the foreign desk where he worked as sub-editor in The Irish Press in the 70s. He was a gentleman and a scholar. He worked next to then assistant chief sub and writer John Banville. Our big open newsroom of clacking typewriters was similar to the newsroom featured in the 1976 movie “All the President’s Men”. I remember a photograph of John and Dermot conferring together with the caption “Woodward and Bernstein!!” They looked the part.
Rest in peace, Dermot

My deepest sympathies and condolences to Professor Keogh's family. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Professor Keogh while I completed research on Irish Foreign Policy. He was a brilliant educator and historian. I always enjoyed our chats and learned so much from him. He had an innate and rare skill for drawing out the best from his students, sparking curiosity and lifelong learning. He has left a lasting legacy on how history should be taught and valued. May he rest in peace.

To Ann, and all the Keogh family,
What an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather. Dermot had an incredible awareness and empathy for the human condition. The tributes show that he lived in a world of love and laughter yet also a private world of ideas and words. When we first met in 1993, he associated my Texas background with no end of comments about pioneers, rattlesnakes, and when YouTube came along, The Dixie Chicks. He liked the song Goodbye Earl. In corresponding with him, he always knew when to write and ask - how are you keeping?
Celebrating my first book at a reception Dermot arranged at the Irish Embassy in DC, I was not joking when I told the crowd he rarely commented on my thesis work – yet he taught me everything – the craft of diplomatic history, the art of teaching, and the gift of friendship. Dermot had a way of meeting someone just where they were – in far-flung locations where IR types live and work, but also in their hearts and minds. When I learned of Dermot’s death, I thought–where will I find you–now. The answer is in all the good memories; in all the kind words and gestures over the years; and in the beautiful legacy of his family, his writing, and my own dreams that he so faithfully nurtured as a steadfast friend.
. . . and then it was the light of day and the next day
and all the days to follow, and it moved into the future
like the sharp tip of a pen moving across an empty page.
