Extending my deepest condolences to Fr.Reids family and community as you mourn his loss.
He truly inspired all he met with his energy and belief in young people.
He enriched the lives of so many.
May his reward be great and may he rest in eternal peace.. Thank you Fr. Des.

Condolences to Fr. Dessie's community and family. Among those lucky to be a Camp Rockwell allumni of the 1970s,Fr.Des had a terrific vision for education of young people. We were introduced to the magnificence of nature, through Environmental Studies. Learning to identify trees, flora and fauna of the expansive grounds around the college. Climing Galtee Mor,visiting the Rock of Cashel and swimming in Lahinch, (as an 11 year old), gave us unparalleled respect for and appreciation of our natural surroundings. Rest in Peace, Fr. Des.
— Margaret Landers (Kent)

Just heard of the passing of Fr Des, a really amazing and inspirational man who had so many facets to him and such remarkable energy. Like so many others I met him as a counsellor at Camp Rockwell which was the highlight of my teenage years. He was remarkable in that he made you believe in yourself and gave you such courage.
Thank God there was no Mr Health and Mrs Safety back then!!.
God Bless You and keep you close.
Thank You Fr Des.

May he rest in God’s Peace, after a lifetime of dynamic and fruitful service. He was with us for 10 years or more at Holy Spirit parish, Bray Park in Brisbane, Australia, where he worked tirelessly, and had a profound impact and influence on so many. He, with Fr Tom Crean and Fr George Lahiffe have left a lasting legacy, and were responsible in large part for the priestly vocation of our son.

Fr. Des was a Seminarian, a Student Priest, in 1959 and 1960 when I was in 2nd and 3rd Year in Rockwell. He was kind, sympathetic and understanding to me and to all of the Students with whom he came in contact with in Rockwell. He remained a friend throughout my adult life and indeed concelebrated my Wedding Mass with Fr. Aidan Lehane in 1970.
Thank you Fr. Des for being my friend.
— Daniel J. Healy.

One of my longstanding memories of Des was when he was living in Melbourne and we (Denis (Des's nephew), myself & our children, Aoife & Ian) looked after his lovely Boxer dog (who's name escapes me). He loved that dog!

As a pupil of Rockwell from 73 to 78 I came across Fr Reid. Dessie found something for me to do always either Canoeing,Choir,Ballooning,Red Cross,Canp Rockwell prep work ,setting up the Agriculture College Rooms for events or even the Sneeky day trip home to Dublin if he was heading that way during term. I think the odd wind sock from Dublin Airport helped here. He appeared to have endless energy and enthusiasm and would never let the grass grow under his feet.
Des had me chasing around the country after the balloon in the agricultural college Range Rover or Land Cruiser and even got me to return a 52 seater coach to Kavanagh’s Urlingford following him in convoy. In recent years I learnt from Fr Redmond he was in knock he passed on my number. The following day I received a call from him and went to visit. He was exactly as I expected and his memory sharp even with a gap of 40 years since our last meeting. Des had an incredible life and was a strict disciplinarian, hugely capable and had an inspiring influence on many of his pupils and we are all the richer for knowing him.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Heartfelt condolences to Father Des’ family. At Holy Spirit Strathpine have wonderful memories of him. His attention to detail for all our Sacred Celebrations. Sometimes at the 9am Mass 12 Altar Servers (our sons included) would process before him. As a reward he relayed them (by light aircraft) 2 at a time from Redcliffe Airport to the Sunshine Coast while parents did the car relay on the ground. The children loved him. Rest in Peace Father Des…you were much loved and appreciated by all at Holy Spirit Strathpine.
