Fiona Valerie Georgina Leon Michael and David-and Maur I was so sorry to hear of Val’s passing.
He was a warm and generous man and was great company
The memories that came back was giving the younger me a ribbing about my feminism and likening me to some of his own daughters.
Watching his requiem Mass and hearing your talk Fiona was how incredibly adaptable and open to the new he remained through out his life. A rare attribute as one gets older.
I hope the great memories sustain you during this lonely time and knowing he truly was his own man
— Helena Lordan

We are both devastated to read to day -10th Sept of Val's passing, devastated to learn that he was buried and few hundred yards from our home and we were not there to pray and say good-bye. We both worked with Val in Haughtons, South Terrace back in the day. Worked and laughed and argued with him and his extraordinary Mother and saw how bewitched he was by his beautiful wife Maeve. God bless you Val, we will not forget you.

May I add my condolences to Maur, Fiona, Valerie, Michael, Georgina, David and Lione on the death of your dad, Val. Unfortunately I missed the funeral ceremonies at the weekend.
Val was a notable presence along with your mum Maeve, when we moved across the road in 1975. Val was always a very cheerful person, cracking a witty joke or giving advice on the challenges of the day. I loved meeting him on the way to the shop and in Aldi’s. I remember his chats and smile, which would brighten up a dull day.
My brother, John, also has fond memories of Val. They worked together in Hickey’s and they would often go to Val’s for lunch or for a pint after work! They were happy days, never to be forgotten!
May Val rest in Peace alongside Your Mum Maeve.

The association with Mrs. Collins and Val originated in 1953 when I was fortunate to become a lodger in Lancaster Quay. Over the next seven years or so I was joined by two brothers Reg and Tom.
Neither Ma (respectively) Collins or Val could drive but a Morris Minor was purchased and lessons were given by Tom. There was no such thing as a Driving Test and when two licences were purchased for a guinea each, all three, including Maeve headed for Dublin. On reaching my home in Dublin both Mrs. Collins and Maeve proceeded on to O'Connell St., and parked there. An engagement ring was purchased in the Happy Ring House, while Val and I celebrated in a nearby Local. The following day the return journey was made to Cork, without incidence.
Now, 70 years later I mourn Val's passing. He has been such a great friend not only of mine but also all my family.
Condolences to Maura (Maeve's sister) and all the Collins' family.

My condolences to all on Val's passing.

I had the privilege of knowing him briefly back in the 80's when he was running the shop on Western Road, he was a gentleman. I used to look after the telephone answering machine there for a company that I worked for back then and my abiding memory is his greeting...
"Collins Hardware Val Collins speaking I'm out on deliveries and will be back within two hours".
On many occasions a £5 note was placed in my hand whether I wanted to take it or not he always insisted .... I guess the answering machine was his lifeline for business back then.

R.I.P. Val.
