I have known Willie for a long time we were in school together in Synge street ,we were in the football club and i had verypleasant dealings with him in Donnelly Fitzgeralds.Willie never changed,he was great company and a true gentleman .
Rest in peace Willie.
— Phil & Donal Bollard
My initial contact with William Donnelly was through being a contemporary of his in Synge Street CBS, both sitting our Leaving Certs in 1964. Whilst attending the same school naturally brings a degree of connection, Willie’s friendly personality created an actual bond that would ignite itself afresh, through the periodic encounters he and I would have had over the years, since we left school.

During the 1980s, when I was involved with Synge Street Gaelic Football Club, an offshoot of the school, I approached Willie with the idea that he might enjoy being a mentor of one of our under-age teams. Willie rose to this challenge, his interest in sport and in people, and in giving something back to the Synge Street community, drew him enthusiastically into the role, in which he served for several seasons.

Willie’s measured manner of speaking and the gently authoritative tone of his voice, allied to his intelligence, judgement, life experience and strong commitment to the cause gave an authenticity to the views he expressed on club matters generally.

A fine man and a decent soul, William Donnelly certainly was. Willie, to address you directly, in the eternity where you now reside, take time to enjoy the scenery, as you drive potential customers around, in everything from Roman chariots to the latest electric cars, unburdened by having to conclude a sale.
— Jack Hickey
