BYRNE, Anthony (Tony) "Socks",
formerly of Hardmans Gardens, Drogheda, Co. Louth.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of Ireland’s great sons. Tony "Socks" Byrne passed away gently on April 27, 2013 at the age of 82 surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and close friends in his second home of Edmonton, Canada.
Tony is remembered and celebrated by his wife, Honor, of 56 years; a sister; two sons; two daughters; seven grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews and the kind people of Drogheda, Ireland.
An Irish Boxing legend, Tony earned a place in history with a Bronze Medal in the 1956 Melbourne Summer Olympic Games. Tony was a natural entertainer and he was often heard singing. He had a quick wit, wry smile and mischievous twinkle in his eye. A humorous remark, quick joke or a good Irish tale was always on his mind. Tony had a way of getting a laugh or smile from everyone.
Tony’s Funeral will be arriving at St. Peter’s Church, West Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth on Thursday evening at 7pm. Requiem Mass will be offered on Friday morning at 11am. Burial will take place afterwards in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Drogheda.
