So sorry to hear only today of Alans untimely passing. I had met him many times when we lived in Portlaoise particularly in O Donohoe's on a Sunday evening. Always very pleasant company. One of my greatest regrets as a professional was an inappropriate remark made by me to Reidin an excellent student. I remember Nialls enthusiasm for rugby when I attempted to introduce it in school. Angela i am truly sorry for your loss

My deepest sympathy to Angela, the children and to the Murphy family on the sudden death of Alan seven months almost to the day since the death of his classmate and school friend , Noel Doran. Their deaths followed that of another classmate, John Bailey. John lost his life in a motorcycle accident in County Dublin some years ago. All three were former neighbours and grew up together. All three attended the CBS Secondary School in James Street. All three sat and passed the Leaving Certificate Examination 50 years ago in June 1971. Sadly all three are no longer with us. Like many people I was privileged to have known John, Noel and Alan. Thanks for the memories lads. You left us far too soon. We all miss you. Rest in peace.
— Ray Cleere

So sad to hear the news of Alan’s passing. Had the pleasure of talking music with Alan over the years as a 14 year old with my first kit where I was introduced to Steely Dan and witnessed first hand how to actually play correctly. Years later in Donoghue's at the bar discussing jazz and the latest amazing drummer to emerge. Always looked forward to bumping into Alan when back home so that we could discuss drums again…. One of the best, a real gent. RIP

My deepest condolences to Alans family. I was saddened to hear of Alans passing. He was a proper gentleman, very welcoming to any new member in the station. Loved coming in at the weekends and his music would be BLAAAAAASTING through the station from his office. Him and his office gave so much character to the station with pictures of family, musicians and Kilkenny GAA stars.

Like others it was through music that I got to become friendly with Alan. One day I showed him a picture of me and my wife with Phil Lynotts mother in front of the Thin Lizzy sign and the next day he arrived in with a very cool slate stone design with Phil Lynotts picture on it for me. I still have it at home. He often told me about his time playing music and you could feel his love for it when he spoke about it and it was great to finally see him hammer the drums at his retirement party. When he left the station and his office was gone a huge chunk of character definitely left the station.

One of the good ones Al!!

Saddened to hear of the untimely passing of this gentleman. I’ve known Alan for over 30 years as he was a great friend and former colleague of my father, Mick.

When I first started playing drums at about 16 years old, Alan arrived at the house on the Block Road one evening and gave me a masterclass in drumming and presented to me a vintage Zildjian cymbal from the 70s which I still have today. It was like being handed a million pounds. I never forgot it. A few years later after I moved to Galway, my band would regularly come to play in Portlaoise and I’d often spot Alan in the crowd.

Superb musician, absolute gentleman and according to my father, meticulous to the finest detail in his job.

Sincere condolences to Angela and all the family. Gone far to soon. Sleep well Alan. X

Alan brought me up short in the Lake School when we were about four years old. He thought about things. His dark eyes made me wonder how deep is this boy but his ready smile and love of wit even at that age made him great to be around. Because of different schools we lost touch then I heard there was this brilliant drummer putting in huge hours over in 'The Products' and it was Alan Murphy. We couldn't wait for him to get together with Dave Prim and stood in awe and joy in The Carlton for his blistering, intense and world class debut. Alan brought me up short once more when chasing a computer fault I entered the Collator's office in Portlaois Garda station to see him there in uniform. In no time we were talking music and he was putting me on to Herbie Mann. Today I was once more rooted to the spot when his cousin Ger told the sad and painful story of his death. Angela and lads, you don't need me to tell you how wonderful he was. Alan "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you"
