There is an Alex-sized hole in my heart; rest in peace, my beloved brother-in-law. You adopted this American sister with open arms. I will miss our conversations about music, theater, literature, politics ... well, everything and anything was fair game. I will forever treasure our times together when you visited us in the States, when I could see the geological wonders of New Zealand through your expert eyes, when you squired us around Ireland and made sure the grandkids had a steady supply of castles, museums and geological wonders to capture their fancy. I will miss your curmudgeonly snark, your ready wit, your love of a good cappuccino with fruit scone. You are gone from us too soon and we will miss you deeply.
— Lisa Corcoran
Thank you to everyone who took the time to post messages on here. They have brought great comfort to all of us who had the privilege of knowing him For me he was a beloved cousin who fulfilled more of a big brother role for me as I was growing up. He was mentor, a teacher a leader in many of our childhood adventures. I am so grateful that my own children had the opportunity to know and appreciate him on our visits to Ireland and his visits to the US and here in Canada. He was kind and gentle with the most amazing sense of humour. Rest in peace dear Alex.

Those of us in the the Primary Section of the DES Inspectorate in Cork shared the 1A South Mall building with Alex and his colleagues of the Postprimary Section. We worked largely in parallel worlds. Fortunately, there was some crossover, including that which occurred at shared coffee-breaks. Whenever Alex was present for coffee, with his quietly-spoken, humorous and truly fascinating contributions, he could make that short interlude the highlight of one’s busy day.
One can only imagine the loss that Alex’s passing is to those who were fortunate to share with him the world beyond those memorable coffee-breaks.

Deepest condolences to all the Corcoran family on the death of Alex. He inspired a generation with his love of geography and dispensed wisdom to all he encountered. It was an education just to listen to him and a great privilege to have him as a mentor later in setting out on a teaching career. What a model to the many he inspired to follow his career path including myself. But his sartorial elegance, love of good cars, wonderful conversation, sense of humour, appreciation of music and a glass of something with that really set him apart as great company. He leaves a huge legacy to education and all who had the pleasure of his company. A true gentleman and scholar.
May he rest in peace.
