Love to all the family - great man ❤️
— Karen Coyne (McGloughlin)
Dearest Fionnuala, Ian & Family,

I am utterly broken-hearted for each and every one of you, but especially for Gran, Ian, and Pablo and Pablo's sisters, Bridget and Constance, who now lose a devoted husband, a deeply adored father, and a uniquely gifted and remarkable Grandfather. I am feeling your pain, your sadness.

My heart also goes out warmly to dearest Kate, Nuala, Colm and Gile (and yes, darling Fred), and to your own children who mercifully have had Alf in their lives for so very long - the loss all the greater for that. I am thinking of you round the clock.

I adored Alf myself and know full well just how very special he was. A charismatic, handsome, rare gem of a man with an acrobatic mind. His wit was incisive, his creative inventions legendry, his kindness authentic. But in latter years, perhaps it was his personal courage in dealing with Parkinson's that was his most noble achievement.

RIP my Dearest Alf.

With Deepest Heartfelt Sympathy

I wish to send my deepest sympathy to the MacLochlainn family on the death of Alf.
As Director of the National Library from 1990 to 1997, and later as a member of the Library board, I learned a good deal about Alf's career in the Library and his various other accomplishments. I have good memories of meeting him on just a few occasions when he visited the Library or attended Library functions. Guim suaimhneas siorai do anois.
