Dear Jonathan, I was so sorry to learn of Barbara's illness - she bravely conveyed the news herself, of course, true to form. I am at a loss to understand why such a generous and gifted person had to contend with such a difficult diagnosis. Dinner with Barbara - which she organized like a DC native - were always an uplifting experience, bringing together a very interesting group of DC friends who basked in her company and looked forward to each visit. She has left a great legacy to us all. My condolences to you and all the family. In fond remembrance of your mother - Maeve

A great loss to French Studies in Ireand and beyond. Barbara was very supportive to me as a young scholar and I greatly admired her lifelong dedication to the advancement of scholarship. We are all the poorer for her passing.
