Just heard about Ben’s passing. Wonderful memories of Ben - and Rita - as kids growing up here in O’Connell Gardens. We could always depend on Ben (Mr Kealy) for the boxes of Tayto for our annual ‘sales of work’ in aid of Biafra! Such a lovely gentle man. Deepest condolences to Rita, Ben, Marina and Paul on their sad loss. He’ll always be remembered with a smile. RIP Ben.

Please read first part

Later when he was Personnel Manager he organised Tayto’s pension plan and many retirees owe their retirement income to Ben’s efforts. Tayto’s long involvement in the old “Community Games” was largely due to Ben. He always spoke so highly about Rita and was so proud of his kids. (Ben Jnr worked in Tayto for a while). He & Rita took the time to come down to Spain when my father “Tayto Joe Murphy” died 20 years ago and that gesture was greatly appreciated by our family. My father had immense respect for Ben and valued his counsel greatly. My mother loved him (what woman would’nt) And, If my mother liked you, you were definitely an ok person. I often think of Ben when I give advice to young people and remember important life lessons that I learned from him. My late brother Joseph Jnr also loved Ben as did my younger brother Peter. He showed all of us “the ropes”..

No doubt he is organising swimming and water polo at the Full Moon Club up in heaven. RIP Ben.

To all the Kealy family:

Ben’s life long love for swimming, water polo and rugby is well documented here on this page. The sheer number of condolences below speaks volumes about Ben’s effect on so many who had the pleasure of knowing him.

I found out all about Half Moon the first day I met Ben, he was so proud of his club. I swam at Otter Swimming Club in Dun Laoghaire as a young boy, so, we had a mutual interest in swimming..

Another important part of Ben’s life beside sports was his long career at Tayto. Ben was a great mentor to me during my earliest days while working summer jobs there and later when I worked at King Crisps (Tayto subsidiary). On my first day, my father took me to see Ben and asked him to “show me the ropes” . Ben was tough, but fair and I learned a lot of valuable lessons from him. He always tried to bring out the best in people and helped them to achieve their goals. He was a people person who had loads of Charisma. You could not meet him and not like him. He recognised talent (while others felt threatened by it) Ben nurtured it and put it to good use. I first met him 50 years ago as a teenager and I learned about selling while riding around Dublin with him in a Tayto van.
