It was with great sadness to hear of Ben's passing; my only dealings were through work, but he was always a Gentleman. My condolence to his family, it's never easy losing a loved one. May he rest in peace.
— John Flannery
I was so sorry to only hear today of Ben's untimely passing. I knew Ben through work and he was always so lovely and easy to deal with. I had reason to be back in touch with him again recently and we had a great catch up putting the world to right. I am very sorry for your loss. May Ben rest in peace.

Ode to Benny

The dim light of a steel November day Reaches its way
Though the low-slung clouds and Brings the house to stir.
The stale smell of smoke from too many rubbed out fags
Clinging while bags
Beneath our blood-shot eyes avoid the mirror.

Outside the grey crows gather for a feast;
A breeze blows east,
And the sound of bells carries up from down the bay.
The dull hollow knocks penny whistle their mournful tone;
Bone on bone,
Between the countless masts that bob and sway.

A brother, a cousin, a father, a son
His race now run,
Watches from an unseen perch above
A mother, a daughter, a son and siblings five
Remain alive,
United by their shock, their grief, their love.

We’ll miss you, Ben, immensely - you’ve left us far too young.
But in our hearts we’ll keep you, with all those words unsaid and songs unsung.
— Patrick Mulligan

Very sad at Ben's untimely death. My condolences to all his family at this sad and sudden loss. Ben has been a good friend in the Flying Fifteens for a long time, a talented sailor who bore his talents lightly and modestly. His kindness, helpfulness and decency shone out. He would notice if someone needed a hand, and would come unasked, quietly, without making a fuss, and help out. He will be greatly missed. He was a very kind employer of my son in a part-time summer job during school holidays, and later very generous with advice and practical assistance in the engineering field at some key points of his undergraduate journey.

Our deep condolences to all the family on the passing of Ben. As a friend of little sister Rachel, there were many memories of Ben putting up with us two. Ben never complained, always had a wonderful smile, a laugh and was always around to help us out. As I grew older, he welcomed my husband into the Mulligan gang with a welcoming handshake and a joke. We will cherish those dinners and Christmas parties together. May Ben rest in peace and we hope your memories of Ben will give you some comfort at this most difficult time. All our love

Having known Ben and the Mulligans at large for many years (beginning with my being in St Anne’s Montessorii school with Rachel), it was a delight to find out that Ben was our new next door neighbour when we moved to Lanesville two years ago.
We shared so many chats over the front garden wall about life, boats, politics, the weather, the big things, the small things…
We saw him almost every day - and he saw us - always bidding us good morning as I rushed and nagged the kids into the car to get to school on time!
He was the nicest of neighbours, a lovely, kind, witty, solid presence to have next door.
We miss him and are so sad he’s not there anymore.
Sending love and solace to all the Mulligans, his beloved children, and the many, many people who loved him.
Ellie.
