Deepest condolences to The family of Bishop Clearly, Bishop Mendy, and the Catholic Church in The Gambia .
Bishop Cleary walked well in the ‘big shoes’ that Bishop Maloney left behind.
In one of many conversations I’ve had with my uncle Mr TGG Senghore on Catholicism in The Gambia, an area he is well versed , Uncle Tom made mention that Bishop Clearys legacy would be “the builder of Catholic Churches in The Gambia”
Now , well over a decade I can see how Bishop Cleary not only built in mortar but also steadfast in building up on the Body of Christ. The latter manifested in the surge of young men he nurtured into priesthood. Additionally during his tenue he had the most churches built under his stewardship. “Jaraama JAMBAAR“ , in choosing to come to Africa after being ordained as a young man you had a vision and a mission which you gracefully accomplished. “Jerrejef. “
You also added your voice to nationhood when it was needed with great courageousness . I remember you once giving an advice under tense political times that ; “ it is easier to catch a bee with a small spoon of honey than with a barrel of vinegar.” Sleep well wise man of God .
The Sunday and feast day ‘yekas’ to the mission house from ‘Therese’ and ‘Ted’ as you fondly called them will hopefully resume in heaven .

Therese and Ted EUNSON.

May the good Lord reward you for all your good works in his Vineyard. It never lacked a genuine laborer in your person. To the Spiritan Congregation and your family who allowed you to come serve the people of The Gambia and the Gambian people who accepted to work with you to grow the faith in the Gambia take courage and celebrate the success of this humble and faithful servant. RIP Bishop Emeritus Michael J. Cleary in the bossom of the Lord.

Bishop Cleary was a remarkable human being who personified Jesus' exhortation to love thy neighbour as thy self. And so, he loved and embraced all Gambians irrespective of ethnicity, social status or faith. Thus enabling him to forge numerous enduring relationships during the sixty or more years he spent in The Gambia. His work and significant cotributions to the development of our beloved country will endure forever. He has left indelible imprints on The Gambia.

On a lighter note, Bishop Cleary had a keen sense of humour. I was told that he once said to one of his students who would gaze at the ceilng when asked a quetion in class and I quote "..... are you looking for the answer in the heavens?".

It is our fervent prayer that the King will say to him " come, ye blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you....".

Heartfelt condolences to Bishop Gabriel Mendy and the Spiritan Confreres worldwide, priests and religious, the Cleary family, Sr. Pauline Leahy SJC, the Singharteh family and all Gambians.

May light perpetual shine on him forever. Amen
