Br Hurley taught maths in James St CBS back in the 60s and was a great motivator whom we called "Di Angelo" on account of his resemblance to a TV hero. He took three of us through honours maths on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons to make up for ground lost by a curriculum mix-up in 5th years - we all got honours! In my case, urged on by Br Coffey to enter the Young Scientist competition, Br Hurley helped me with diagrams and added an artistic landscape background to a 3D representation of my project site which allowed the public and the judges understand the geological setting. I have no doubt his artwork played a key role in my winning the competition in 1968. He was also a sportsman, an accomplished artist and an excellent teacher who has touched the hearts of so many grateful ex-students and friends. May he rest in peace.
— George Reynolds, Blessington

Comhbhrón ó chroí le clann an Bhráthair Con,Donncha agus lena chomhbhráithre Críostaí go léir. Bhí sé de phribhléid agam é a bheith mar mhúinteoir agam i mBunscoil na mBráithre Críostai sa Teampall Mór go luath sna seascaidí. Fear ilchumasach ab ea é. Ní raibh a shárú le fáil mar mhúinteoir, gan trácht ar a phearsantacht shéimh chneasta. Ceann de mo chuimhní cinn is deise atá agam ar mo laethanta bunscoile ná bheith ag éisteacht leis an mBráthair Ó Muirthile ag léamh sliocht nó dhó as "Hiawatha" don rang ar fad i rith na seachtaine. Chruthaigh sé atmaisféar draíochtúil sa rang agus bhíomar go léir faoi gheasa aige.Nil aon dabht ach gur fhág sé a rian ar na daltaí go léir a bhí faoin a chúram agus ar ghach duine a raibh an t-ádh leo aithne a chur air. Solas na bhFlaitheas agus leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige.

Sorry to learn of the death of Bro.Hurley. I was privileged to have him as a teacher in Templemore C.B.S. in his native Co.Tipperary and although it is over 60 years ago, Denis Con is still remembered with great respect and affection by those who knew him.
He and other young and talented young Brothers-like Kevin Skehan- put so much time, energy and enthusiasm into teams, choirs, bands and so many other activities which enhanced our lives then and afterwards. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.
Sincere sympathy to his friends, family and colleagues.

Deepest sympathy to the Hurley family and to the Christian Brothers Community in Callan on the death of Con. I was privileged to have known Con since he arrived in Synge Street CBS in Sept 1986. He had the charism of empathy for everybody he met and enriched. I represented Con at the funeral of Brendan Grace with whom he shared a close friendship.I was reminded by a Synge Street colleague today that on one occasion Con declined a kidney transplant so that a younger person could avail of it. May he rest in peace after an exemplary life well lived.
