I have been living in Australia for 11 years and learnt from a call from my parents on Sunday of this wonderful man’s passing. This wonderful man who taught me in 5th year in De La Salle, Waterford, 30 years ago. This wonderful man who strived and succeeded in getting the best out of his students. This wonderful man who always had time and patience for us boys and a humility so rare in this world. I cried upon hearing this most sad news. My father will be reading at his mass today, and, though oceans and continents separate me from being there, I will allow myself a little smile at the vivid memory of him almost combusting in English class as he willed us to explore new words, their meanings, and his uncontainable joy when we understood what that word was about. The world has lost an incredible, lovely, gentle, kind man.

I was deeply saddened when Brother Kevin contacted me about Brother Stephen's passing. He was an extraordinary man who was full of compassion, kindness, generosity and his humour was infectious. When we started bringing students to Castletown he could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. He had a wonderful way of making you at ease and nothing was a problem. I was fortunate enough to visit him the last time I was in Castletown in November and I was pleasantly suprised at how he was doing considering his recent health issues. His colleagues in Castletown adored him and had nothing but wonderful things to say about him which is not in anyway suprising. He will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Brother Stephen, you well deserve it.
