Brendan's death brought back bittersweet memories of my deceased daughter Katy's wonderful study abroad trip to Ireland in the summer of1989. She took the "Encounter Ireland" course at Trinity College and had Prof. Kennelly as an instructor. I have his Love of Ireland poetry book that he inscribed for her. She loved his classes. I was so glad she was able to take that memorable trip as she died exactly 2 years later of a spinal cord tumor at the age of 23 years.
May Brendan rest in peace.
— Barbara Hennessey USA

My deep and sincere condolences to Brendan Kennelly's family - Alan, Paddy, Kevin, Mary, and Nancy, and grandchildren My condolences too on the death of Doodle.
David Shanks,
A 1960s star-struck student at Kennelly lectures in Trinity and one who later met him socially and journalistically, via The Irish Times. He was very kind, eloquent and entertaining. I always called him "Sir" - and he me "Shanks" (affectionately I think.). I now realise there was only a half-dozen years between us. But he certainly deserves the "Sir"..

Farewell to a Colossus from the Irish academic world. He joins the pantheon of the great and the good in his heavenly home. Professor Kennelly blazed a trail for us callow youths in Tarbert's St. Ita's College under the aegis of the mighty Miss McKenna and her team of super teachers. You were a great friend of glorious Balybunion for many years. My late Father and Grandfather were your close neighbours in Ballylongford many moons ago. Suaimhneas siorai to a most unpretentious and humble man. Greatly missed..

Regrettably I never had the privilege of meeting Brendan but I always admired him. I loved to see and hear his interviews, the twinkle in his eyes, the smile that lit up the room and most of all that beautiful, soft distinctive voice. So sad that voice has now been silenced but his legacy lives on forever. Heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved him. He is now reading poetry for the angels.

Brilliant, Brendan Kennelly,
A native of wonderful Kerry,
His words inspired lots,
His words inspired many;
A wonderful gentleman & poet,
To him I did once write,
I got a charming reply,
Cheerful, uplifting & bright.

A native of Ballylongford,
Born to Timmie & Bridie,
Who created much happiness,
Created much glee;
One of eight,
Six boys, two girls,
Whose spirits all shined,
Like the brightess of pearls.

To go from there,
To be a Trinity Professor,
The beauty & journey of life,
He certainly did explore;
But wherever he went,
Wherever he did roam,
Beautiful Ballylongford,
Was always his spiritual home.

I got to know his brother Father John,
When he lived in Tralee,
At Fatima Home,
Where also lived my auntie;
A large number of Priests & Nuns,
Lived in that beautiful place,
Sitting in morning Mass with them,
You just felt their grace.

A poet of note,
But also with Ballylongford he did play,
He once represented Kerry minors,
At Croke Park the home of the GAA;
He's now with his family team,
Still radiating peace & sunshine,
With lovely God,
Making our life journies easier & fine.

God bless Brendan, family & friends, and all who knew him, always in my prayers, Donnacha.

One day when talking to Brendan I expressed surprise at a particular partnership that I considered mismatched. His reply? " My mother always said that if you were in love wit a heap of dung you wouldn't see a rotten straw in it." God rest you Brendan
