My deepest condolences to Mr Lawler’s family and friends. He was a wonderfully kind and funny man who genuinely listened to everyone and every idea. His classes have had a lasting impact on me and even years later not a week goes by where I don't think about something we discussed.
— Catherine - Past Pupil
We were in Melbourne (with our eldest daughter, Helen, who was in Leah's class in UCD) when we heard the very sad news of Brendan's untimely death.
I enjoyed many years working alongside him and remember the close collaboration in the early days of CSPE when there were only 3 teachers involved.
Our deepest sympathy to you and your girls, Marcella. Thinking of you at this time.
Margaret, Michael and Helen Mohan.
— Margaret Mohan
Heartfelt condolences to Marcella and the girls. Brendan was a truly remarkable person who combined brilliance and humility with ease. I'm so grateful that I could say he was my friend. Even just watching him interacting with others was a pleasure because you saw him radiate such kindness and warmth. He was fifty years older than many of his students yet he never lost his innocent delight and childlike wonder at life's little gifts. Will miss him so much.
— Allyson Prizeman, Mount Temple
My deepest condolences to Marcella and the family. Mr Lawler's Religion class was the light of my time in Mount Temple. When I moved to the school I didn't fit in, but Brendan was one of the few teachers who made me feel at home. He had a remarkable ability to bring out the best in others, his teaching always being a collaboration with the students.

Despite his erudition, you felt Brendan truly listened to every student, believing in the potential within all of us to become more kind, gentle and considerate of other's differences from ourselves. He is a testament to the goodness of humanity, that if we can help the inner-light of but one person, our life would not be in vain. As the Irish seanfhocail says: Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine, we live in each other's shadow.

Thank you for the wonderful classes, many laughs and for bringing me to the Faith, Brendan. Sincerest condolences once again.

"To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all." -- 1 Corinthians 12:7.
— Naoise

It was such a pleasure to know you Mr. Lawlor. We all felt we knew you and you knew us rather than just going through the syllabus. Your classes we looked forward to, we learned more and also found them fun. You were a different kind of teacher and a pillar of Mount Temple. History classes had a personal touch. May you rest in peace Sir.
— Mount Temple Past Pupil 2005

— Michael O'Shea, Chaplain, Coolmine Community School
I remember one time in class when I was in first year he asked me to describe something to another student and I absolutely butchered it. What he said I still say to this day, he said “god it’s like describing color to a blind person” I laughed for the rest of the class. The world will laugh a lot less that’s for sure.
— Fionn mcgibney

The news of Brendan Lawler’s passing sinks deep. Although many years have passed since graduating Mount Temple, moments reminiscing on memories of the time still always involve reflecting on the impact Brendan had on such formative years of our lives, and his genuine interest in caring for and engaging with students. He was someone who carried the best of themselves every day and inspired everyone around him through even the smallest interactions, as evident from these condolences.

The lasting impact he had on all of us lives on and his positive influence will be carried through many future generations to push us all to be the best we can and treat each other with respect and kindness, promoting positivity and love, as he did every day. One of the most genuine and wise people I’ve ever met, one of the best. My deepest condolences to the Lawler family.

Myself and many other past students are very saddened to hear of Mr. Lawler's passing.

A decade on from graduating, I still vividly remember his classes and the lessons we learned. Mr. Lawler had compassion, honesty, and wisdom - he treated the students as adults, in a way that fostered interesting conversations and really grabbed everyone's attention. He was a genuinely kind person.

While Mr. Lawler may have passed, the positive impact he left on his students will very much endure. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
— Nathan Davies
Such sad news. Always enjoyed his class & anytime I met him in the years since. He always remembered. It was a particularly pleasant surprise to see him recently at Luke Murphy's funeral (another past pupil) on an otherwise very sad day. He was always a thoroughly thoughtful & gentle soul ...with the patience of a saint for some of the messing that used to go on back in the day ...whether it was Dorfmeister or lesbian seagulls he took it all in his stride. Constantly interested & interesting man. RIP king!
— the SBC, BMS & all the MT Heads from the 90s

May Brendan now be welcomed into his eternal home with his God whom he loved and served as he hears the words "well done my good and faithful servant in you I am well pleased"

Those we love don't go away

I wish to express my deepest, sincerest and heartfelt sympathy to Marcella, family and relatives on the sad passing of Brendan, beloved husband and father to his 5 daughter's.
I worked with Marcella in M&S for many year's and was first introduced to Brendan whilst he was in the store with his daughter's of whom were only little children at the time.
Over the year's I grew a great fondness, admiration and respect for this gentleman who no doubt was loved and respected by all who knew him.

So saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Lawler - I have so many fond memories of him from school in the early 00s - He made the classroom such a fun environment and was so passionate about bringing us all on an exciting journey to learn. His class was always the one you looked forward to during those long school days. We are all very lucky that he enriched so many students lives .
— Ciara - Past MT student
One of my very first classes in September 1997 was Mr. Lawler's. I think it was my second or third day. I will never forget his patience, and his almost unearthly kind and gentle manner. I remember that he had this unique scrawl on the blackboard, and he was almost never at his desk - he much preferred to wander about the classroom, chatting to everyone. He always let us be ourselves and was one of those people who had clearly found his vocation in teaching and being a source of support to teenagers. What a brilliant man, and how lucky we all are to have known him and benefitted from his talents. Holly and I are so sad to hear of his passing, and are thinking of his family.

As a self conscious teenager, Brendan’s note of ‘great smile’ beside my name to help him place the faces to the new roll book at start of year is something that has stayed with me and comes to mind often. I have no doubt that countless more students have similar memories of Brendan’s kindness that continue to live on.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends, so many of us are the better for having known him. May he rest in peace.
— Past MT Pupil
Dear Family of Brendan,
May we send our deepest condolences on the passing of Brendan.
My first day as a student in MT was also his first day there in Sep 1987 - what a gentleman and an incredibly kind man, he went on to teach all my children and their memories are mirrored in how we all felt about him as a family . He was loved by all students that ever mentioned his name - many great memories of his classes and trips.
RIP Mr. Lawler you were a truly wonderful person.

To Marcella and the Lawler family,

The tributes on this page speak for themselves. Mr Lawler left an impression with every student he had. There is no better tribute I can pay than the knowledge that every past pupil of Mount Temple felt a shift on Monday when they heard of Brendan’s passing.

Compassion, understanding and eccentricity exuded from the man. He was my favourite teacher, he made me feel understood, accepted and heard. My life is that bit better and more well rounded for having known him.
