I was so shocked & upset to hear this sad news after my dad, daughter & I (all jelly babies in some capacity), had only been discussing that very day as to how much we all miss Brendan after relocating from London to Clare. I feel honoured & privileged to have known such a magical musician & teacher.

Very saddened to hear about Brendan. Our sincere condolences to his family. Brendan taught us music south of the river back in the 70s and 80s. We learnt so much from him, had loads of fun, met some amazing musicians and had the confidence to gig from a young age. He definitely inspired us and we are still playing music today. Brendan was definitely a one-off! Rest in peace.

So very sad today to hear of Brendan's passing. He taught me the whistle before recommending the accordion for me when I was a student of his at the Irish Centre in Hammersmith for many years. All round the world he touched people with his passion for the music, his talent as a teacher and musician, and his love of life and of humanity--for us, it was in Sydney in the early 1980s. And his energy and his music will live on in the playing of all those he inspired. So sad. So grateful.

I’d like to express my sympathy to Brendan’s loved ones. We were students together in the 1960’s. As well as being a fine musician he was a lovely, gentle and intelligent man. I was very happy to have made contact with him again in recent years. May he rest in peace. Bob.

Dear Sharon and girls. So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Brendan a truly remarkable man who inspired so many of us in London to love our Irish musical heritage. Hope you'll all be ok. Sending you lots of love Siobhan Gilmartin and family.
— Siobhan Gilmartin
My respects to the memory of Brendan, who visited Sydney in 1982, taught Irish music to myself and a number of other young Australian people, encouraged and played music with us, and had a big influence on that generation of musicians. Brendan also saved me when I visited London in 1985 and was down on luck and money, he found me somewhere to stay, bought me some food and showed me where the Irish music was. Such generosity of spirit, still can't thank him enough.
— Paul Mortimer, Irish National Association, Sydney Australia

Our thoughts are with Sharon, the girls and the Mulkere family upon hearing this sad news. We have fond memories of many Sundays over the years spent at the Hillingdon Irish Club with the other jelly babies trying to convince Brendan that we’d practised! He was a talented musician, unique and inspiring teacher, and a great advocate for Irish culture in London. Sean (Hickey, RIP) was delighted to have a fellow Clare man playing such an important role in the kids lives and enriching them in Irish culture. May his legacy live on and may he rest in peace.

Brendan had an extraordinary vision to put Irish music and culture at the heart of life and learning in London and beyond. As a pupil on Monday nights at St Robert Southwell school in Kingsbury, he would paint a picture of that vision for us. It seemed an impossible dream.

My daughters now havre Irish music lessons at that same school during school hours with Sharon Kelly (one of Brendan’s very talented pupils). His vision is a reality for all to see. The next generation of talented musicians are thriving in the ground that he prepared. It truly is a joy to see.

Thank you so much, Brendan, for your vision, talent and generosity. You were one in a million. Sending you light and love.
